If it's a niche where everyone is competing with money it'll be difficult. What I'd do is cover a lot of topics and questions that solvs problems audience of the niche may have.

But the overall best approach to SEO is picking a niche where you stand a chance. You don't want to spend so much effort and resources chasing something you may never get.

Nevertheless, without money just go with content marketing. That's your only hope.

Nothing you can do.
SEO takes money, good content takes money. No money no honey.

is there really a chance for small businesses nowadays
if you build a base of loyal (repeat) customers, sure! You just have to think outside of the box... and invest a little money too into building that customer base. After all, what business is that which doesn't have (even a small) budget for marketing / advertising?

Still, if your budget is so low / restricted that you can't afford $100-200 a month for publicity you can spend time on forums in your niche and attract leads / customers that way. It is time consuming, yes! But nothing sustainable is free in business, so you gotta invest something somewhere :)

So... forum marketing is one option until you make money to spend on PPC / SEO...

Another option is social media and UGC sites like Pinterest, LinkedIn, Quora, Reddit, etc...

Last but not least, you can use parasites to divert people to your site and try to convert them there. The parasites change frequently, so go with the ones that are ranking at the top of google nowadays, as next month other parasites might take their place...

Just do some keyword / topic research in your niche and see which web 2.0s / parasites are ranking high for a lot of keywords, then join those sites and publish quality content on them and - if those sites allow it (they should, normally) - insert a link to your site in those pieces of content and - once google indexes that content (and assuming that you've chosen good keywords / topics to write about, of course) - you should see quality traffic coming in without having invested any money. But you gotta spend time to make the content good enough for...

1) google to index (this means you gotta use the content optimization tricks like SEO entities, semantic SEO, LSI terms, all of that mumbo-jumbo)
2) people to find enough value in, in order to click on your link...

I've managed to scale my website to about 5K unique daily and i am still applying for review copies here on BHW. They help me boost my rankings and generate even more traffic. For free. Of course, i carefully choose and i do give honest reviews to the work i receive.

While long-term growth is impossible even in highly competitive niches, small businesses can do SEO without money. It takes time, consistent effort, and smart content.

no money, not much unless you are good at networking and have a lot of contacts

SEO without a budget boils down to strategic resource allocation and leveraging underutilized channels. While traditional methods like paid tools or content farms are off the table, technical SEO becomes your backbone - optimize site speed, fix crawl errors, and structure data where possible using free tools like Google Search Console or open-source platforms. Content remains king, but here’s the twist: focus on hyper-niche, long-tail queries with low competition that larger players overlook. Use forums, social communities, and Q&A platforms (Reddit, Quora) as both research hubs and distribution channels by providing value-first answers with subtle, compliant links. Also, tap into user-generated content (e.g., reviews, testimonials) to build trust signals without spending. The timeline? Expect 6...12 months for traction, but the payoff is compounding visibility - if you’re persistent enough to outlast the noise.

It’s absolutely possible to get results without a budget—it just takes consistency and the right strategy. Focus on topical authority, build out content clusters targeting low-competition long-tail keywords, and use internal linking wisely. For backlinks, I’ve had good success reaching out to niche blogs for contextual mentions. It’s slower than paid methods, but it builds a much stronger foundation in the long run.

Parasites and traffic from social media, especially Reddit and Quora as they are receiving more traffic from Google and other search engines

With exceptional difficulty. It's tough, nigh on impossible in competitive markets.

You can try focusing on very low long-tail kw's with next to zero competition, but be prepared to spend time on converting this kind of traffic through a funnel (I.E visitor - form submission - contact - sale).

An exception to this rule would be for offline businesses that provide services locally. Ranking a local window cleaner in a local town + closely surrounding areas is still childs play- and as easy to achieve as it was back in 2010 (without spend).

That would be very difficult. But what you can do is generate high quality content and promote your website on different platforms. Facebook groups and pages, forums, discord, and even TikTok comes to mind. Also make sure you are targeting great keywords, your images are compressed and scaled, and you do proper internal linking. Local SEO done right will also be very helpful. Don't expect to outperform many competitors, though, especially since it's an overcrowded niche.

"How do you do SEO without the money?"

You don't, people who say you can are blowing smoke up your ass...

Find websites that link to similar articles, write a better version of that content, and email the site owner asking if they’d consider linking to your article instead.

I think you can't do without money
SEO takes money .

it’s tough without a budget, but with consistent content and smart keyword use, small businesses can still rank, it just takes time and patience.

If you have no money, the only black hat SEO technique you might use is Parasite SEO, but even that's getting increasingly difficult. All other black hat strategies you've heard of absolutely require money, and black hat SEO is far more difficult than white hat SEO. Creating a black hat website capable of achieving millions of monthly visits within six months to a year—and that might only survive for a few months to just over a year—requires purchasing expensive, high-authority domains. Beyond that, you'll need continuous AI-generated content and additional backlinks, all of which demand money and experience. You also have to ensure you recoup your investment while the site is still live. Beginners simply can’t play this kind of game; even white hat SEOs who successfully use such tactics are highly skilled and have years of experience exploiting algorithmic loopholes.

As for white hat SEO: if I went back to being a beginner but with my current knowledge, even using the cheapest available SEO tools, I'd still need to spend at least $150 per month. And that’s assuming I’m personally generating and optimizing AI-written articles, planning my own topical clusters, and either manually securing guest-post backlinks or buying high-quality links. If you want to scale, hiring help becomes inevitable. Given all this, do you still believe it's possible to do effective SEO without spending money?

Without a budget, forget SEO. The days when you could casually write articles and earn money by ranking easily are long gone. You'd probably have better odds shooting and editing videos on your phone for YouTube, or exploring other money-making methods altogether.

"No money involved is No SEO at all" is not entirely accurate.

You can start SEO for free by writing blogs, optimizing your content, and getting help from friends or know ones for backlinks.

But to get strong results, you’ll need to invest time, money, or both.
