From my experience, I don’t only look at the number of backlinks. What matters more is where those links are coming from. Even a domain with fewer backlinks can be valuable if the links are from real sites and relevant niches.


I usually check the referring domains, anchor text, and whether the site had real organic traffic before. If most links come from spammy directories or unrelated sites, I usually avoid it.

I don’t care about count, I care about quality, 10 solid links beats 1k junk every time.
Check referring domains in Ahrefs, look for real sites (traffic, indexed pages), not PBN trash or foreign spam.
Also pull anchors + Wayback, if it’s pharma/gambling history or spam anchors, skip it no matter the metrics.

What’s junk for you?

To evaluate expired domains, I don't just look at the quantity. For me, enough isn't about a specific number like 100 or 1000 links, but rather the relevance and diversity of the domains pointing to it. You should use Ahrefs or Semrush to check the backlink profile. A good domain should have links from major newspapers, educational sites or sites related to your topic.
To identify spam, you can check if links come from unfamiliar foreign language sites (Russian, Chinese), if the anchor text is full of sensitive keywords or if there's a sudden, explosive growth avoid those sites immediately

Checking only backlinks isn’t enough to judge an expired domain properly. Backlinks are the starting point, but the whole procedure includes much more.
1) Backlinks (biggest factor)
For me, the strongest indicator is the amount + quality of do follow links. Ideally I want at least 3 do follow links from domains with 500+ traffic (Ahrefs traffic).
When judging quality I look for:
• gov / edu links
• links from trusted news websites with real traffic
• links from magazines / authority publications
• Ahrefs “Best by links” pages bringing real traffic
• strong DR domains with real organic traffic (not just high DR on paper)
2) Topic + language relevancy
Anchor text and referring domains should match the domain’s historical niche and language.
If anchors are full of casino/pharma/loan keywords or random foreign-language spam, it’s a red flag even if metrics look good.
Some niches increase value a lot:
• foundations, NGOs
• schools, universities
• city/municipality websites
• associations
• journals/labs
• sports organizations
Some niches usually decrease value:
• low quality affiliate blogs
• cheap ecommerce sites
• coaching/yoga small service businesses (roofing/plumbing etc.)
• crypto/token projects (often overall low quality)
Topics I personally avoid completely:
• CBD
• AI-generated blog networks
• product review farms
• loan/credit comparison sites and similar
3) Search volume / demand
If the domain has keyword demand (fresh volume in 2025/2026 is best), it adds value. The more and fresher the volume, the better. Avoid sudden traffic drops.
4) Wayback history (mandatory)
Always check Wayback for:
• spam content
• hacked periods
• mass outbound links
• suspicious redesigns
• long-term redirects
Redirect history matters:
• redirect in 2023–2026 = often not a big issue
• redirect in 2020–2022 = negative
• redirect in 2015–2020 = don’t like it
5) Indexing (small bonus only)
Google index status doesn’t affect the score much, but if a domain still has many pages indexed, it can be a small positive signal.
So overall: backlinks matter most, but relevance + traffic + Wayback history.

Junk = no traffic, no rankings, just exists to link out.
Stuff like PBNs, auto blogs, foreign language spam, sitewide footer/sidebar links, or random directories.
If anchors look like casino/pharma/viagra or the site’s deindexed/empty in Google, it’s garbage.

Focus on referring domains, not backlinks. There's shittons of spam going on, so make sure you actually check those RDs by hand.

And buy whatever you can afford. But don't expect 10 - 20RD domains to do much, especially if you want to use them as a money site or 301.

A domain with 100/500 RD domains would be good enough as a 301 then, right?
How much do they cost usually?

Backlinks aren’t everything. I look at where the links come from: a handful of ******** links from real, relevant sites beats a mountain of junk. Check referring domains quality, not just count; look for gov/edu or reputable media when possible. Always run a Wayback history to spot spammy periods, mass redirects, or sudden shifts. If the history and the linking sites feel legit, it’s worth considering; if not, move on.

That's extremely wide range. Depending on quality, anywhere from 200 - 5K+. If they do not have traffic or GMB that is. Otherwise much more potentially.

I ignore raw backlink count completely and focus on referring domain quality. Run the domain through Ahrefs, filter referring domains by traffic, if a site has hundreds of posts but zero organic traffic, it is a clear red flag. If more than 30% of links come from low traffic sites in completely unrelated niches, I walk away no matter how clean the DR looks on the surface.

There is no fixed number for enough backlinks it depends on the keyword competition and whether the links come from real relevant sites. I judge it more by referring domains link quality anchor diversity and whether the backlink profile still looks natural instead of chasing raw counts

Enough backlinks is never about raw count it is about whether the referring domains are relevant trusted and enough to match the serp you want to beat. Spammy is easy to spot when anchors are over optimized links come from dead sites or the profile has obvious network footprints instead of real editorial history

I'm new in this but, in my opinion I don't really focus on a fixed number of backlinks. For me, " enough" just means the domain has some real and relevant links, not just a lot of random ones. I usually check if the links come from decent websites and look natural. If I see too many spammy links, Weird anchors, or unrelated sites, I just avoid that domain.

Quantity of total backlinks doesn't matter to me. In fact, I avoid domains with thousands of spammy backlinks. What matters to me is the amount of difficult to acquire backlinks in the profile.

it’s never about the total number of links, but the quality of the referring domains. i’ve seen domains with 500 links rank worse than ones with 20 solid, niche-relevant ones.

If some of those links are from Wikipedia, CNET, DR90+ sites, then I start to feel good about it, and a clean History in the archive means it is a Quality domain! You can check those backlinks quality through Ahref/ Semrush!
