How do you determine competition?

Hi guys,
Wanted to ask how you guys determine your competition because I'm just getting back to SEO after long break and I wanna try ranking low comp niches, like niches which you can rank with just EMD Landing page and 2 tires link building using some good services.
But I'm not sure how to determine if I can outrank the competition with my budget.
What I actually wanna do is ordering some Web 2.0's as T1 and PBN's as T2, not too much though.
So how you determine the comp? what should I look for in Ahrefs and MajesticSEO?

You can try to use some tools like longtailpro or MarketSamurai. There are tons of tuts to use these tools to analyze competitor. EMD is not working now, you should build your brand.
 
Even tools are ultimately useless. You just have to manually look at the page 1 competition and make an assessment based on their links, and your own experience. I've seen tools be WAY off, more so than you'd think.
 
Agree with above. Take a look at the top ten and inspect each site.
 
I look at the websites on the first and second page. If I see Wikipedia, Amazon, Huffington Post, or any of those popular websites appearing in the search results, I usually don't try to rank for that keyword. Also, if Google displays videos or "News" in the SERPs, then I usually avoid the keyword. In addition to this, using tools like the Moz Toolbar help a bit, although in some cases I've found that the tool wasn't as effective as manually checking the websites
 
I dont really care about my comp i just keep building links but yeah if comp f**ks my website and i f**k every website which is ranked on first page.
 
Well I'm using MozBar and SEOquake now and those are the first page results:
Some autorithy sites like FB, IGN and Youtube.
and the rest of the sites are PR n/a and PA & DA not more than 50.
How would you determine this competition?

I mean do you think that something like I described in the thread can outrank it? thanks!
 
PBN links are too expensive to be used as tier 2 links. The web 2.0s amd PBN links should all be used as tier 1 links. If you stick to keywords with less than 500 monthly searches, ranking on the first page won't be difficult for you.
 
It's best if you can analyze competition without tools, based on your knowledge and experience, however if you need a tool then I would recommend Traffic Travis.
 
My technique; I focus on long tail keywords,
1-. I search the keyword on google and look the number of results. If there are less than 1M means its reachable for me. Then I enter the keyword between " " in the searchbox. If results are less than 30.000 its ok for me.
2-. I use Mozbar to inspect first page results. If there are 5 or less pages with a DA<30 its reachable for me.
 
Get yourself a copy of LongTailPro buddy. Best tool on the market right now.
 
Use SEMRush to analyse (general) top 20 competitors in any given niche. Then go ahead and check their backlink/anchor profile with a tool like Ahrefs.

After that, you should get a clearer picture whether it's possible or not to rank in that niche/for that keyword.

BTW, TermExplorer beats any other kw research tool i've ever tried.

I agree with everything you've said, only about the videos i'm unclear about. If for a keyword the top 10 is made up of mainly youtube videos with no backlinks, is this still something to avoid? I always thought if there were many yt videos in the top 10 with no backlinks google was 'desperate' for something to show lol

But how exactly do I build knowledge/experience analyzing the top 10 if I have no idea what I'm analyzing?

Quality of backlinks is huge I know that much. But what else am I supposed to be looking at? How do you actually gauge a competitor manually, what are you looking at?
