if your coin is gaining value, how do you decide when to sell it for profit?

Its a pure gambling, no one can really tell.

Crypto is not pure gambling.

Traders know how to read charts for day trading for example as there are certain patterns that happen before it goes up/down and so forth.
If you know how to analyze coins, you can predict (& have a high success rate) of when / how much it will grow, just like stocks. Join Crypto groups & check them out, certain players in the game know of it very well and have made people millions, literally.

When to sell would vary on the coin & your belief. Do you believe in this coin long-term? Keep it long-term (for ex: Ethereum). If it's a quick pump n dump, don't be greedy, better safe than sorry. You can also read charts & history gains/drops. I'm not an expert in reading them at all, I invest for long-term & I do some day-trading here and there based on what other reputable people suggest (& show charts & explanations for). Smart thing to do is to take principal out sometimes.

Lol you got some really useful answers but ill try to help even more...

First before you get into the coin decide wether you're buying it for the long term or are you trading?

If you are trading, look at tech analysis and time your entrance and exit based on resistance and support levels mainly.

If you're hodling long term, then try to decide which price you want it at, and let it go... then when it hits the price get out / take some profits

You can analyze and somehow decrease the risk, but no one can "Analyze and Predict" . and no patterns can tell you what will be tomorrow.
Of course you should invest in a coin you believe in. but there is no math here. or the math here is not yet solved by human.
This is a volatile market, and that's all you can say about it. you know that it will change, but no one can tell in which direction the change will happen.

You could say the same with stocks in your case.
