Hi,

I run a google campaign ad system and I have gotten it down pretty well I'd say lately. I've been doing this a little under a year and I think I've run into someone trying to negatively affect my campaigns.

First case

I ran a call only campaign after normal business hours because it was too expensive to run normally. It was a terrible campaign that I'm actually probably lucky that someone screwed with. It got almost not attention or love from people but I ran it 24 hours just to see if I could get it down. After not performing at all, one day I got over 20 clicks on less than 50 impressions all searching extremely similar areas. Google said they were not invalid clicks. I got 0 calls and it was between 12 am and 4 am. Fishy af. I just turned it off.

Second case

I got our click through rate and call rate up through negative keyword use. This has dramatically decreased our spend while upping our sales. Today, during the last hour after having 7 clicks on 89 impressions or so, we went 0 for 189 in the last hour on our two most money key words and they were all very targetted ads I would expect a 5-6% CTR believe it or not, 3% minimum. I think they are trying to lower our Ad Quality score by searching and then not clicking as many times as they can.

Is there any way to combat these two cases? Especially the second one. There is no way I went 0 for 189 on the two most buy word filled campaigns I have given all the negative terms I have. I'm most worried about this tactic from a competitor.

Report them. You can also very if this is intentional by looking at the "report editor" and seeing if there's multiple traffic from the same IP.

Other than reporting like JDR mentioned above, it's the nature of the beast to send bad spam traffic to your competitors. The big guys hate anyone in their space, and can often gather a bunch of bot networks without multiple IPs to differentiate (Up to residential IPs as well if they have the means) in order to inflate clicks to burn their competitors money.

You can see this in any niche really, just gotta hope it doesn't happen to you. Easiest way I combated it back when I did diet pills (As it's a BH niche, competition is brutal there) was to have the ad sets divided into states and some competitors didn't catch on. Other wise, it's a cat and mouse game.
