How do you check if a keyword itself is banned on Google Ads?

I’m running campaigns and I’m not sure if my issue is the account itself or the keywords I’m targeting. Some ads won’t run at all. Is there a way to confirm if the keyword is banned/restricted by Google, instead of just being an account suspension problem?

If a keyword is banned you’ll usually see the “eligible limited” or “not showing due to policy” tag in the keyword status. Account issues won’t give you that, they’ll just block everything.

The simplest way is to test the same keyword in a clean account with no history. If it still doesn’t trigger impressions, then the keyword is restricted.

Use the Ad Preview tool. Search your keyword there and if ads never show for anyone, it’s most likely blocked. If other advertisers show up but you don’t, then it’s your account.

Sometimes it’s not about the keyword but the landing page. Google matches the two, so even if the keyword is fine, your page content can trigger policy blocks.

I usually run a small exact match test with a generic ad copy. If it spends even a cent, the keyword is fine. If it stays stuck at zero while other keywords move, then it’s blacklisted.

Firstly, check the keyword status, which appears in the 'Status' column of the Search keywords table within your Google Ads campaign / account. Based on that, further analysis can be done.

I think the easiest way is to test the keyword in Google Ads’ policy checker or campaign setup.

Make a new campaign with the keyword and a clean landing page, if it still gets disapproved it’s the keyword, not your account.

Sometimes they allow it but reduces your quality score so you'll spend more for the same result

Make sure your landing page loads fast and clearly delivers what the ad promises.

Use ad extensions like sitelinks, callouts, and structured snippets to boost Ad Rank.

Try more specific or long‑tail keywords—they often have lower competition and higher relevance.

To check if a keyword is banned on Google Ads, try creating a campaign and adding the keyword. Google Ads will flag restricted or prohibited keywords instantly.
