Hey guys I was just wondering, because like three days ago i purchased a new domain name from 1 and 1, now all of a sudden i'm getting several emails from web design companies from places like india soliciting their services to me, I would like to know how they even know I just purchased a domain? Did the domain registrar sell them my contact info on a marketplace somewhere? I know about whois.net when you want to see how long a site has been online and who purchased it, but in my situation i don't even have a site up how did they find me is what i would like to know?

Thanks

1) domain registrar sells information
2) domain registrar worker sells information
3) whois info
4) cookies
etc.

From your list I think it may be 3 & 4 I have the same issue with purchased domains from name.com and namecheap.com exact 1 -2 days after purchase I get several e-mails in regards to the new domain from different webdesign companies and similar.

Why are they selling my info shouldn't that be illegal, what about godaddy? Like how you see on optin pages where they say we will not sell your info to third parties

If they are selling the info it must be in their terms of service?
I must admit, I get it quite a lot as well.
Maybe they can search whois info for new/updated data...?

I just had the same situation with 1and1. I picked whois privacy when registering domain with them, but the whois is wide opened :/

Sometimes I reply to them but I never get a response. What if I was really interesting in ranking #1 for 199$? You never know.

Many registries give access to the list of all registered domains for free.

1on1 sucks , In my experience they just scrapre whois information and send bulk email, whenever i bought whois on namecheap i never received any of those emails
