How do theme licenses work?

So i have this theme/template for a site. The person that sold it to me told me its 1 site license. So i can only use the template for 1 website/domain.

I dont really understand how this works, and i have 2 problems with it.

1) what if the person who sold me the site removes my license tomorrow, or if it gets removed for reasons beyond his control. Does my site stop working? This makes me feel uncomfortable.

2) if i buy something i own it. What if i want to use the theme for multiple sites? I cant because of 1 site license. For each new site i have to buy it from the seller again. That bothers me.

I dont even known if the site actually has a license. Maybe he just told me that, like a bluff.

Anyway, talk to me guys who understand this shit. How does this all work, what do i do here?

If it is a wordpress theme then it is published under the GPL license. A quick Google search will tell you everything you need to know about it.

Its not wordpress. I believe its laravel.

I hate updates. I disable them wherever i find them. Websites, browsers, operating systems. That way everything always works for years and years.

So should i hire someone to look at the theme files and tell me if its somehow under license?
 
Every theme comes with license file usually license.txt.

Check if such file is there.

If it is not there just to their website and ask support that you want to buy this theme and what is their licensing term. Hopefully you can get answer.
 
Ok so I did a search in files using notepad++, and I found many instances of the word "license" being mentioned, such as:

license: MIT
Licensed under MIT
Released under the MIT license
Licensed under the Apache License
See the License for the specific language governing permissions and limitations under the License
Make sure you have made all the changes and you are ready to transfer your domain's license. This domain's license will be revoked. You will only be able to run application on your new domain.

Aha, see the last one? So how the hell is that enforced though?

I may have to hire someone to check and explain to me what I'm dealing with and what my options are.
 
If you are that paranoid just get a nulled theme , oh no they might have a virus , just stick with the theme provider, if its from themeforst or something reliable , you don't have anything to worry about , focus on your website , worst case the theme is "broken" if that's even possible , you still have your content and traffic and you can switch the theme in one click

It's not themeforest. Just an independent guy selling from his own website.

But I believe he didn't create the theme. Someone else was selling it long ago and then stopped. And then multiple people took it and continued to sell it, adding functions and stuff.

Yeah I can easily switch theme if something goes wrong, but it would create downtime of hours/days until I get it fixed. Because if the site stops working my first assumption probably won't be that my license was revoked. So until I figure out what happened, then until I find a different theme to use, then learn how the new theme works and all that. No good.

I can't live with the risk. I need to have the theme checked to see if there are any license/encryptions/checks, and if there are to remove them and free the theme from powers outside of my control.

I always worry too much. Allows me to prevent problems rather than deal with them when they blow up in my face :p
 
again the problem is not with the theme , im guessing you're using either WP or Joomla , whats the worst that can happen , your website is down ? switch the them in 5 sec and get someone from freelaning website to adopt it to your needs for like $20- $30 , don't keep theme choice keeping you away from the main reason you are making the website for ($$$) , had the same problems before , choosing the theme was freaking mission impossible for me with all the needs i had , but eventually i was convinced that im just running away from the real work . focus on your work / Roi and then worry about the theme!
