How Do SEO Companies Build Links?

This could be the case though how do you buy so many links? I know they could use the money the clients are giving them. But c'mon its got to be hard to buy 10k plus links

I've worked as a consultant in a SEO company and yes, they mostly do both. They do not only count in buying links but have a vast (tens, hundreds or thousands) net of domains and sites. It all depends on the case they are currently working on: If it is possible to rank well with only linking from their own network, why bother actually paying for links.

This of course varies between countries and niches - as mentioned above. In the States (I'm not american) I assume you'll actually need both these methods to get even a decent rank.

And most companies build links over a long period of time. Usually this can be then invoiced per hour spent per week or month (after the initial startup of course, where you get the keyword analysis and the basic onsite stuff done)

The thing here is that most SEO companies are stuck to the past ways of doing business. They are not adding value in all the ways they could as sometimes 1 + 1 is more than 2. The thing that will most likely be emphasized in the future is being able to create sites that actually enhance the brand in question, are easily usable, very light and load up fast. We will most likely see some companies losing their positions after a while as they are not able to change up their tactics

the biggest corps have insane custom tools built for them which surpass xrumer bigtime

Maybe use BlackHat techniques to find good high PR backlinks and then WhiteHat to actually build them

I asked a big SEO company this and they said they post links in relevant discussion boards and forums. Not sure if I believe that, but that's what they said.
