How Do People React When They Find Out You Work Online?

You explain it wrong.

When somebody says "I'm gay and i fuck with boys", people look at him weird.
When they say that they are homosexual or gay, people understand it as they should.

Anyway, what I wanted to say - use regular job titles.

Marketing Manager
Affiliate manager
Brand management

Etc... act as if

When I say internet marketing, they equate it with selling stuff online. I just tell them I do worldwide tactical information broadcasting, and they are baffled.
Give them some tough words to ponder over, and in the meantime, you keep rolling in your monies.

Like I said, if you can't dazzle them with brains...:D

When I was an over-the-road truck driver, and people asked me what I did, I told them I was a Consumer Commodity Relocation Specialist.

Now THAT generated a lot of WTF looks...:squint:

I did explain what i do several times...no one believe me. So i started answer shortly:
I am spammer! (with huge smile on my face). Most people react very funny and never ask me again.

I only really do it as a hobby right now, so I don't really get many questions. When I do, I just say that I "sell things online".

They ask me: what you do?
I say: nothing.
They ask: how you get money?
I say: money just finds me...
They ask: how much for a gram?
I say: ...

Just kidding, I just do IM part time...

Pretty much what has already been said....It all happens in stages:

Stage #1: People think you are a bum/don't believe it/think you are playing on the computer/think you are scamming people in some MLM type crap.

Stage #2: You show them/begin to explain. They get that strange bewildered look on their face of "I don't know what the f you are talking about/how are you making money doing this."

Stage #3: I give up and just show them some earnings. They are like "damn that is awesome. Show me real quick how to do this so I can bank too."

Stage #4: I tell them yeah maybe, there is actually a lot that goes into it. I can tell you the basics but you are gonna have to learn on your own like I did. Then they are like "yeah ok sure, but just get me one of those sites up so I can earn $500+ a month and I'll be good."

Stage #5: This is where I wish I never told them anything and want to shoot myself in the head.

That more or less is how it goes with friends/family. When I speak to those involved in real business I position myself as a Digital Marketing Consultant and services provider.

I talk to them about reputation management, ad optimization, web development, social media mangement, and customer relationship mangement. These are most often terms they have a general concept of and things go much smoother.

Just tell people you work in marketing. Most of the time they won't care enough to ask for details.

If you're trying to impress someone then say you own your own marketing business.

First question: People ask What do you do?
I tell them I am a "web designer"
Second question: How much DO you earn?
Enough for me to live my life and what do you have to get from my earning?

Silly question come when I say: I do SEO,internet marketing.
Then the second question is this:
Do you earn anything?

There's usually two reactions for me:

Half of them think that I am just screwing around not making anything

and

The other half things I am doing some sort of illegal shit. Sadly my parents belong to this group lol. I tell my dad how much I made in the last 6 months and he just says "well let's hope the cops don't turn up at your door some day"

This would so be my father, lol. I can see it now!

Most of the folks wonder where i get my income and how i can afford to stay home all day and get toys and gifts for my kids all the time and go on holiday 3-4 times a year.
When i say i work online and earn a decent living.
They laugh and say "na you must be a drug dealer or or something"
My reply : Dream what you want about me, i don't have the time. Whilst your dreaming, i'm counting my bank roll.
$$$

:D

I love it! I'll keep that one in my mental Rolodex!

Reading through these responses were hilarious! People are nuts to ask how much you all are making online.

I have to be honest though, I would get a good chuckle if I got some of the reactions you all got. I'd use some of the replies in this thread too!

They think I'm some deadbeat or a fake entrepreneur or a web design guy because I'm pretty low key. Little do they know, hahaha.

the less people know about you, the better

Man i don't know what kind of people some of you guys interact with but most people i meet i just tell them i have an online business and usually they look at me and are impressed and want me to teach them everything step by step for free right there LOL!!

So my biggest problem is telling people i run a business and not a charity as for whatever reason everyone just assumes its my duty to sit with each and every one of them and teach them an exact step by step method to making money like that's all i have to do with my time!

I'd be like, "Wanna know the secret? I taught myself, and you can too. Have a nice day!"

Don't tell Momma I'm an Internet Marketer; she thinks I'm a piano player in a whorehouse.

them: hey man they are hiring over at mcdonalds, just wanted to tell you.
me: i told you i make money online..
them: dude why dont you just get a real job.
me: why dont you go fuck yourself, asshole.

There are a lot of good ways to put it. Sometimes I tell people that I generate revenue out of thin air. Obviously that isn't true but to most people that's what it seems like if they see money magically being deposited into my paypal and bank accounts. Otherwise, I use terms like Internet Marketer, Content Publisher, etc. I don't talk to random people much, though, and all family and friends love the fact that I can stay home and be a bum.

To be honest anyone that isn't curious or doesn't believe I make money online is not someone I really want to talk to anyway. Any halfway intelligent person would be curious about anyone that owns a business and manages to make money without having to clock in at an office every day.

That said, the simpler folk are just going to need to see the status symbols to be convinced. Do you have a nice car? Been on any vacations lately? Own a nice house? That's what you need to convince the average joe.
