How do people build link authority nowadays?

I'm not referring to ranking one specific page for one specific keyword, but rather authority.

Take an example, you have a Medium blog that talks about 'blue widgets' but there are also 20 other Medium blogs with the same topic, blue widgets.

In this case, since all 20 articles are on the same domain as you, Medium, you would need to get more authority than all the other 20 blue widgets articles in order to rank for blue widgets.

How do people do this now?

you keep mentioning "authority" but you didn't specify what type of authority you are referring to.

In terms of SEO authority means backlinks. The more backlinks you have, and the better they are, the more authority your domain has.

In terms of brand authority, authority means brand awareness, spread and recognition. Coca-Cola has a lot of authority because everyone and their dog knows what Coca-Cola is. And so is Amazon, Sony, Nokia and many others.

What kind of authority are you referring to? Backlinks, or offline authority? Because Medium is a pretty authoritative site when it comes to SEO, but not authoritative enough in the real world. So, if you're going to create a page on Medium you will inherently get a share of its authority (or "link juice" as it's also called by SEOs), so your Medium parasite page does have authority. Do you want to increase this type of authority? Simply build more and better links to that page, it really is as simple as that. Are you having a different type of authority in mind? Then please explain what you're referring to!

Really well said, and exactly the kind of answer I was looking for.

Indeed, I was thinking of backlinks.
Spam clearly doesn't work as it used to—sometimes it even hurts rankings.

So is there a cheap way to build authority consistently (see: 1 hour of work = x amount of links) while not f**king up the link profile?

If we´re talking about content, by covering a topic in an in-depth, comprehensive, and extensive matter.

If you´re referring to SEO, by earning links from authoritative and relevant sites.

Strinctly speaking about backlinks, and hours vs results, without a budget, i would just compile a list of 50-100 forums related to the niche and spam them to death. By spam, I really mean replying with nice content and linking back.

I've gained some of them organically and they do move the needle.

I'm not sure about this, I've seen some posts on BHW of someone getting 12 million visitors a month with spam only, so I wouldn't say that spam clearly doesn't work as it used to :)

just like with authority, I will have to ask you to define "cheap". What is cheap for me might not be cheap for you, and vice-versa. That's one thing...

The 2nd thing... even if you build shitty links you'll still get a bit of authority, but obviously not enough to show anything for it. Which brings me back to my initial reply to you: to get authority you need many and good links. But good links, as much as you'll probably hate to hear, are expensive... well, expensive by my standards, by yours they might be worth peanuts. So again it's about perspective...

Also, while good links are generally the same for most niches, there are some cases (for local SEO, for example), when citations might help more than backlinks.

The 3rd thing (and just like @Roger Marquez mentioned) if you cover the topic of your site in depth you'll increase another type of authority that is very important with google nowadays and which I forgot to mention, and that is topical authority. I have seen countless sites with no backlinks outranking high DR sites simply because of how good and on-topic their content has been. So, this is another way to build authority if you don't have the budget for backlinks..

I don't know what to respond to the "1 hour of work = x amount of links" part, though because - again - it's about a lot of variables like... are you building the links yourself, or do VAs help you? What types of links are they, and how long does it take to create one such link? And so on... Only you can answer this question
