How do movie streaming websites get traffic?

Since trend is long gone, can anyone share how those embedded movie streaming websites used to get any traffic? It seems organic seo is a no go due to DMCA and all I can think off is maybe they used to spam fb groups? well till they eventually got banned anyways

what else?

Most of them are ranked on Google and do not host directly the content on their website as the movies are hosted on Uptostream and such providers.

I'd say most are leveraging parasites to forward users onto their streaming sites, rather than trying to rank the streaming sites themselves. Because there is no actual movie being shared on the parasite there is little room to get a DMCA issued successfully, and being parasites they're currently much easier and quicker to rank with spam, 301s, or a semi-extensive PBN. Plus if they get burned, there are always other parasites out there to use quickly.
