Let's say you pretty much copy what successful authority sites do - write very informative, helpful and valuable long article on a specific topic, have a cool title with the potential to go viral ('7 surprising lies that .....', you get the point), you also have a very nice theme and logo, author about page with photo, the whole deal.

How do those sites then explode and start getting traffic? Press releases? Paid facebook posts? Does anyone have any experience and willing to share what the best 'method' to kick-start a good and valuable website is in their experience? :)

We are assuming a general niche many people will be interested in, like losing weight, cooking, etc.

    Blogger sites
    Being active on forums
Writing a lot of important articles and doing good on-page SEO

1 - Do proper keyword research
2 - Target keywords with its long tails
3 - You can start getting from the long tails with content alone

    1. Throw allot of money at advertising: Paid search, paid social media exposure ect...
    2. Develop content that is designed to be shared on social media: http://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffbercovici/2014/07/17/nailed-it-buzzfeed-cracks-the-pinterest-code/
    3. Hire professional writers, not people from iWriter
    4. Often a business will branch out into a different segment of the market and use their other business to get initial exposure. For example, VICE was initially a magazine and then they branched out into other forms of content. They have now moved to be one of the largest content creators around and don't just monetize their content, they sell it to various other networks.
    5. If they have a massive marketing budget, they will often use mainstream marketing channels like TV, radio, billboards ect...

Like most large companies, they started small. Slowly they generate trust, awareness and authority with consumers and search engines. This means your on and off page SEO is are up to scratch. Remember, target the low-hanging SEO fruits first and gain confidence before mixing it up with the big boys :)

Someone posted a study here a few weeks ago I cannot remember the thread or the title but the summary of the article explained that most big sites that have rankings were among the top adwords spenders.

In other words they were debunking the "build quality content and they will come" myth by showing that you still have to drive traffic to the content and most authority sites did so via paid advertising.

An alternative method. Create a likes account without applying in mylikes. And start to grow (go to your feed and start to massive follow all the followers of every user shown in the feed, like-comment-reshare some pictures, in addition, upload some)

In a week you should have 2k-3k followers. Upload or share funny or sexy pics and add your page link. 10% clicks assured (200 - 300 visits).

    2. Attractive template design with responsive time. (Check page loading time to avoid bounce rate)
    3. Perfect On page Optimization.
    4. Do content marketing without focusing any keyword. And make the title user friendly. (Title is similar to "How to", "Top 10 tips" )
    5. Share each post in Social networking sites and get more likes and follows.
    6. Ask feedback from your visitors.
    7. Along with that initially you must start with SEM and SMM. TO get more traffic quickly. At the same time you must work accordingly for SEO.

If anyone has rather than this. You can add accordingly. :)

This article you are talking about should have link diversity, links that come natural to Google. this would give your site a good amount of traffic, and the other factors are said above by other commentators, always choose keywords related to your niche, on page o
ptimization for your site, directory submission and etc.

To actually launch a website and then to have explosive growth into an authority site are two completely separate steps. Gain enough exposure first, and if people like your site, they will link to it/share it/etc.

Depends what kind of authority site you mean. An authority on insurance information isn't going to get shit from social. Something like Elite Daily gets most traffic from social. There are tons of traffic sources, but a true authority site doesn't pay for traffic, it's insanely hard to make a profit when you're paying to get traffic to content.

An authority site builds on plenty of quality content and long tail keywords.

    You don't rush it.

Long tail keywords and quality-consistency of content should be your priority. Though I agree with those saying that big ‘authority' sites spend lots on advertising. Social media is one, but then they advertise there too. Plus, they usually have multiple writers who also promote their articles to their audience and networks. But to become big, you first have to become comfortable being small and then expand with proper SEO and content. And don't forget to ‘package' your products well.

The whole power of whitehat SEO won't work if your target audience is small.

For about two years now I've had two writers. I have one US writer that I pay $4-$5 per article. She is 'okay'. I use her for mini sites, bulk product descriptions, etc.
I now have a new writer as of a few months ago that I pay $10-$15 per article, and it's definitely worth it.
And as of a week ago, I've found a journalist that has connections to high DA sites. I payer her $40 per article, but that actually includes the link on the high DA site. But her writing quality is amazing. You can just see the difference between her and other writers. She writes as a passion, as a professional, while my other writers, even the $10-$15 per one, they write to get paid, and produce work quickly. The journalist one will spend what seems like hours properly researching the topics I need.

People aren't going to share crap articles, and they aren't going to link to crap. This is the way the internet has changed the last few years. It's about social media and sharing. On top of that Google is getting stricter and stricter with quality. Prepare today by creating extremely high quality content.
