How do I stop spam user registration on my Wordpress blog?

Apricot he is talking about Contributor/Author registration, I am not sure that Akismet can solve that problem. Maybe I am wrong

Any reason why you need to leave registration open to everyone ?

I'd like to keep the registration open, I just want to rule out spammers and automated bots from registering on my site.

You could just add a Captcha. I personally prefer Sweetcaptcha because it's free, actually fun for users to use, and there are no bots in the world that can break it (yet). RECaptcha is another option that might help as it is based on text that an automated reader couldn't read, however, some of the puzzles lately are really just strings of numbers (not super safe) and occasionally you get puzzles that are actually unsolvable blurs not even a human can read.

You can ask members to submit their ID or driving license (JPG or PNG format) to complete the registration process.
