How do i remove redirected pages from sitemap?

Hey guys,

I am working on a local business site, and there were too many 404 pages in the sitemap. So, I made the 404 pages redirect to the homepage via Rank Math.

But the pages are still there in the sitemap, and they still will be getting crawled by Google bots.

So, how do I remove them fromthe sitemap?

Can you give more details? What platform/cms is your website based on?

Also, look into also removing them via google search console & adding noindex tags.

I am using WordPress. And no, they aren't indexed in Google. And even if I remove them via GSC, they will still show in the sitemap,

My concern is that they will still take a crawling budget, and I don't want that.
 
You can remove the 404 pages from the sitemap by going to the Rank Math plugin settings and excluding those pages manually. Look for the option to exclude individual URLs from the sitemap. Just add the URLs of the 404 pages there, and they should not show up in the sitemap anymore.

Miseed the rankmath part. Most seo plugins, including rankmath, have this functionality, check this guide:

Then, via GSC resubmit the new sitemap to speed up things.
 
In Rank Math, go to Sitemap Settings > Posts/Pages and disable the specific ones you redirected or set them to “noindex” — that usually keeps them out of the sitemap. Also clear your sitemap cache and resubmit in Search Console.

Identify All Affected URLs​

  • Make a list of all the 404 URLs that are showing in your sitemap.
  • You can use Google Search Console or a crawling tool like Screaming Frog or Sitebulb to extract this.
