How do I rank my Google Places higher?

All of my keywords are in the top for of a Google search but I appear 10th or worse on Google places. Anyone know how to increase this?

In addition to reviews, I've read that local citations have a lot to do with your ranking on Google Places. After I paid for a local citation service for my friend's business, his spot on Google places increased. The approach I am taking with his business is contextual link building, with an emphasis on the specific and surrounding location of the business being mentioned. I'm hoping that creates relevancy in Google's eyes.
