How do I protect my startup idea perfectly?

  1. Hello, it took me for many years to come out with my startup idea. After doing a lots of research, & analysis. Not just an idea, but in term of design too. Logic, user-friendly, clean, minimalist, all the design pages are based/followed the current tech industrial formula.

  2. I had hired few designers for this project, and asking them to do the specific design for what I wanted, through 99designs, and of course they need to sign the NDA doc. Now, the design concept (prototype) is almost completed. I need to forward my design (project & idea) to another designer for them to start doing analysis to make it more perfect (or maybe creating/adding more design).

  3. So the question is, how can I protect my idea and design? It took me a lots of work for this, from idea to perfect design & prototype. Now it just need a good coder to make it alive. I don't want in just a few hours all of my hard work get copying or clone by other.
4. I'm new in this startup field. My plan is... idea > sketching > design > coding > market. Is that true? I have the capital not much around xxxk btw. I read few content on the blog, its more complex than I ever imagine, witch is I need co-founder, and stock % etc and etc lol

If it's a product there is patent but for tech if big companies like facebook like it they'll just steal it like they did with snap chat. Get some advice from a qualified intellectual property lawyer, rather than a forum
 
The only way to completely protect it is to never tell anyone else about it and do all the developing yourself.

Unless you have access to Trump's lawyers, you're shit up a creek.

Everybody in the tech industry steals tech ideas, especially billion-dollar tech giants. That's why Apple and Samsung are still fighting in the courts. Samsung stole the iPhone, repackaged it and named it Galaxy.

I know this bc I own this shitty phone. It's an iPhone for Android.

Apple knows this but Samsung changed the Galaxy just enough to skate around technical details.

That's what you have to deal with.

You can't, sooner or later someone will copy you - it's part of capitalism and you need to get used to it. But it doesn't really matter if they copy you or not, what matters is the execution. An idea is completely worthless unless you execute it. Ask ANY VC and they will tell you exactly the same thing, especially in today's world where almost every idea has been commercialized and yours won't be a big breakthrough, revolutionary or industry-disrupting one.

Also, unless I misread it, you are building a SaaS and there is way more to that business model than just a software and features. Customer support, success, feedback loops, churn reduction, etc... are even more important than the software itself and its "nr of features". Having said that though, your software must have product/market fit otherwise you will fail miserably and lose your entire investment.

Now, as I said above, my opinion is based on the fact that your idea is not something unique, rather you found a market need or gap in your competitors and are launching to do better; otherwise just file a patent and there you go!
 
File a patent for it. Depending on the location of your designers / company you can file for a US, UK, European or Worldwide patent. I say designers, because if your designer is European and you are situated in America, that person can still sell the same design from an EU based country unless you have a filed patent for that jurisdiction. Each one are lengthy processes, but definitely worth investing the time in!

I have a EU patent for a product. It was a 15 page document and an shite bag of an application, but worth it.

I'm so fucking glad Samsung did that though, otherwise we would be using Apple's shit because they "thought" of it first. Which they didn't anyway... Apple "stole" everything to make the iPhone from DARPA - this is not a conspiracy theory, it's a fact. The technology that powered the first iPhone was developed for the US military since the 70-s, but since every military project is commercialized decades later when the project is no longer "black", that's why Steve Jobs had the idea of getting the tech and selling it in-mass for profit. He didn't invent jack shit like some people think, however he was THE expert when it comes to marketing and fooling people to buy overpriced crap.

Nobody ever done it yet. If it running smoothly, this technology totally will change on how we "interact" with money. It will make every transaction on every area even in 3'rd country (people that selling street food), become cashless.
It will cut the transaction time too. I dont know.. it have hundred of functions inside on single app. But I start with 10 first, the core function.

If big company see this, they gonna clone it, pump million of money through marketing. And i'm left behind. :/
 
IMO, don't worry about that, even if your idea is completely new in tech, other peoples/companies won't give attention before you're starting to get a good community.

Make the product in secret, then grow your community fastly.

Nope. It have nothing todo with blockchain or crypto currency. Im not try to create another new currency though.
 
I would say you can't protect an Idea... I would just be loud as you can. I mean connect to people in the finance sector etc. making some teaser Videos of your vision. Make it attractive for future Users open a FanPage or Forum...

maybe not a new crypto currency but the blockchain technology is much more... especially in case of security and decentralization
 
If you launch it live it wont be like nobody will know,you will have to deal with protecting and staying #1.
 
Get lawyered up. Get the core ideas and mechanisms patented and get copyrights on the names etc you use.

Launch it, then approach a tech giant and sell it.
 
1) +1 for "get a lawyer"

2) Impossible to protect 100%. Some highly industrialized countries don't give a shit about US patents. The minute you release something in US/EU/West, there is already a copy in the East.

In China you can find perfect, identical, same-factory-built copies of iphones, oakley shades, nike shoes, tablets, PCs, anything. You can put the fake oakely lenses through the UV testing and light testing and they are 100% the same. They are able to copy things in minutes and just put a different brand on it.

So if I were you I would not base the new business security on legal measures. Make sure the product itself is hard to steal.
 
hmmm.. I would say be prepared for everything. Even patents are shit when it comes to defending your patent in China.

First, keep going forward with your idea.
Second, If the idea is a multi-million dollar idea (atleast to you) then try to pitch it to VCs and see what their response is. (Either you will get the funding thereby strengthening your war chest or you will get a pulse of the market via the feedback you get from VC)
Third, Hire the best growth hacker you can find. So that you can get an advantage over the second movers.

A lot of other things has to be taken into consideration in each steps but I think you can understand what I am trying to say, it is all about execution.
It all boil downs to, do you want to fight with the copycats over court (expensive) or do you want to spend your time beating the hell out of the copycats via your companies strategies (profitable).
Eg:
Apple - Samsung
Kickstarter - Indiegogo

There is always space in the market.
It is no more - innovate or die.

But you just proved my point: everything in tech is stolen. No one invented anything. There's nothing new under the sun. All it takes is someone that is really good at marketing to get a hold of your idea. Not to mention Eastern countries, like @bartosimpsonio brought up. They just wait for people to come up with something new so they can snatch it, produce it for a penny and sell it for $1 on sites like Wish.com.

OP, my uncle came up with an idea, shared it with a company that was supposed to patent it for him, and a month later he sees an ad for his product in a major national magazine.

The company didn't patent shit. They stole the idea and made it their own, then produced the product and advertised it as theirs. He didn't get one red cent.

I told him the same thing I'm telling you: get a lawyer. A real one. One that's reputable, knows patent laws and sees the big picture.

You can't protect an idea. Sorry, but that's the way the world works.
