How do I properly use google keyword tool?

I am trying to use yahoo anwsers to make some $, but I suck/ am new to using keyword tools. Whats the most effective way to search for keywords?
and how do i use long-tail keywords can someone please give me some examples? Thanks

This is how to do keyword research:


Long tails are just easier to rank for variations of your KW:
KW = blue widgets
LT1 = blue widgets with 97 legs
LT2 = blue widgets unicycle

so your main website might be bluewidgets.com
but you might have pages bluewidgets.com/bluewidgetswith97legs
also bluewidgets.com/bluewidgetsunicycle

which would be easier to backlink to and rank.
