How do I make adsense lucrative?

I was using adsense on my website but was getting 16 cents CPM. I get all of my traffic from a facebook page but it doesn't seem to do me any good. Why is my CPM so low? How do people make thousands of dollars on adsense? Do I need to have the right niche?

Some people make a lot of money on adsense because of a profitable niche with high CPC. The niche is preferably low competition that is easy to rank for. That's how you do it.
