How do I make a big splash on the internet

I'm getting a site together which I think/hope will be considered newsworthy and would appreciate a few top tips on marketing it and getting it 'out there'. It's not my area of expertise so not sure what best to do.

I'm guessing I need to cobble some sort of press release together, but assuming so, need to know how to get one together and importantly where to send it.

As well as this, are there any other things I should do. Appreciate any tips.

http://www.ebizmba.com/articles/blogs for very popular blogs.
Go and make manually good quality comment and hope they notice your site and find it valuable.

If you want to be picked up by mainstream media (newspapers etc) a good and paid for press release is your best bet. Last time I did one prrnewswire.com (I think) was the biggest PR distribution site but that might have changed since then.

If you think you have a truly awesome idea, go to Techcrunch and submit it, you can also think on some viral marketing you can do linked to your idea. start a blog with linkbait to it, start commenting in Technorati top 15 websites. This is what I can tell you with such limited information about the website.
