I am trying to rank for a competitive keyword. It's about 1500 searches with cpc of about $300. Every day, I feel more and more like this keyword is manually moderated. I dont know why, it's just a gut feeling. None of the sites on page 1 are blackhat, if they are doing SEO, they have done a great job of hiding it because the backlinks look so real.

I dont know if I should continue with this project or if I should abandon it. If this keyword is manually reviewed, I am screwed. How can I tell?

Rank a parasite and see what happens. I think you will get few weeks window period which will be enough to recover investment .Test and see.

like aussie said fire up a burner and see how long it lasts.

5 days < is probably manually reviews
over 5 days probably not especially if days become weeks

Just abandon it.

A niche with $300 CPC and all legit sites at the top is for sure manually reviewed.

A $300 CPC is a pretty darn good indicator that they pay close attention to that niche... that said, the only way to know, is to try.

When you hear Matt Cutts mentioning keywords like mesothelioma in his videos and the PPC price is $500+ then there is a high chance that this worth hiring a full time person to sit every-morning and go through the sites on the first page making sure that black hat SEO or any SEO are not ranking well .. SEO success simply means businesses investing more in SEO and abandoning PPC (not Good for Google)

LOL, you're just clueless. Big Niches like loans, ALWAYS get manual reviews

Bullshit, who reviews what?

If you want to make any claim ensure you backed it up with some evidence.

Manual review is nonsense, don't fall for this myth.

One of the benefits of actually watching Cutts videos is that you do learn some things. One of the things I learned is that there are search quality teams, who do indeed manually look at search results and assign them a quality score - and that quality score is correlated to the 'new' SERPs after an algo update as one of the ways of determining how good the algo update is.

So no, it's not bullshit.

nothing is certain until you achieve it. I think you should go for it, if you really want to know and are willing to invest.

I would not go for such a niche, instead, go for those with decent cpc so you can rank multiples of those.

I ve seen a niche where manual review happens in every 3-4 months rather than every week or so. Still lot of money is made in between. So,knowing the frequency is also important. Only way to know is testing. Try your luck with youtube playlist url.
