i am trying to register at a site and it says that as I am using a vpn/proxy it won't allow me do it!

but how to hide the fact that I am using a vpn? how do they detect it and what can we do about it?

You are using a VPN which is either free or abused. Most of the free one are useless if you want to create accounts. Go with private ones or get private proxies.
