How do I get banner ads on my wordpress blog? Is there a plug in or do I have to place the html block in the template? Any help would be awesome!!!

You would place the html block in the template, unless what you want is some sort of rotating banner plugin then you would usually set it in the plugins options, but by standard you just edit the template and insert like you would normally.
