I'm just getting started, and I'm still learning so bear with me.

I've been getting to grips with Facebook ads, so I understand finding those hidden groups, going after an age group, who have specific interests in certain areas of my niche, however this is for targeted advertising

However lets say for this instance, I want to target a broad category. Lets say Travel. We all know Travel is a very broad category, but if I think about whose running the site...for arguments sake, lets say:

A 40 - 50 year old female mother, married, 3 kids - 2 which have moved out, 1 in college, so I've had a lot of experience helping 18-30 year olds. Lots of travel history, been to lots of different countries, visited lots of different places and rarely go back to the same place twice unless it's something special. Go on several holidays a year and I know all about finding deals, the best tips on self-catering, what and what not to pack, reward schemes, airport tips, location reviews and all the things to do in various locations.

So I know my speciality, but how do I identify my target market here? I know I can rule out lads holidays or travelling to Thailand for example, however this still leaves the target market extremely broad.

Things such as deals, tips etc is a broad market, and there are a lot of bigger sites out there which are run by companies, not individuals. So how do I go about targeting such a site?

    Dear,
Targeting a market is very much dependent on the entrepreneur of the business. So, if you are an individual and not a company you can target a particular city or a particular season for travel(like summer deals). It will help you to move forward in your niche.

To simplify things, you may want to compile lists of things to do in different areas based upon your individual experience.

When i was doing some research for a client who are a travel agents, i did some research and compiled what i found about the market and the competition. It was mainly to do with social media because i was going to manage their accounts. I came across some sites that might interest you but i need to move computers to get the document so i will message you with it.
