I’ll get to the answer, but a quick fact-check for now-
The definition of long tail keywords had seen a number of evolutions over the years. Back then when there were no rankbrain and google was solely dependent on ‘keyword frequency’ as a core ranking factor, tons of 4-8 words keywords might have come up with almost no SERP competition. Tools like LongTailPro(the software version, not web tool) were just one big mine of long tail keywords. Those days...
Eventually, search bot(or engine) now understands search intents, and shows results accurately. Given the situation, finding long-tail keywords, or I shall say, narrowed down topics that are worth writing articles for, are quite hard to find.
If you’re in a rush, go for tools like answerthepublic and search with the ‘Root term’. It’ll bring you up tons of long tails keywords in the forms of ‘Questions’, which might be in use. Also, similar approach might work on Ahrefs or Google Adwords as well, but the number of suggestions is way too low for these kinda tools(no offense).
The method that I personally use to mine out untapped long tail topics(kw) that would rank me fast with a promise of organic traffic goes as-
- Scratch the topic, go in-depth of it and group it up into a few micro-topics.
- Take notes on ‘key terms’ or ‘root terms’ for each of the topics.
- Categorize them according to intents(knowledge-seeking, troubleshooting, buying intents, etc).
- Go for Google suggestions and play a little with the advanced search strings with the key terms that we’ve found before.
- Note them up, check for the MSV(optional), and check the competition in person(don’t be KD-biased).
- Viola...you might have got a few long-tail keywords to craft your contents on.
