I use open office then (its free) then save it in a PDF format

Yep, I use open office too. You can create a quick footer and header in Photoshop and add that to every page, then export as PDF like kyhass mentioned.

I got nitropdf, but that just hangs. Moreover, whenever i try to create a pdf with word, the titles on other pages change automatically.

Open Office all the way. You can convert to PDF and create a linkable TOC as well...you can even set your security so that the text can't be copied, etc.

yet another vote for open office. i've even created real books with open office using the same methods outlined above.

Ever since my microsoft word trial ran out I just use open office. It works great just like everyone here says!
