Can some1 explain the algorithm and what captions are actually used for? I see accounts that post streamer highlights, and their captions are just Wikipedia-style summaries of the creator. What’s the purpose of captions in that case? How should captions be used for optimal growth?

It's very difficult to explain though I see real results whenever they are used in bulk. For some reason few months ago there was a huge boom in Chinese captions, my videos would be getting considerably more views than if i had no caption or a different caption. My guess is that a) either these are used as identification for other mass posting systems; or b) it's just IG's way of integrating asian culture in Western-based media. Last two mass-post caption trends were related China and now Japan.

Every video absolutely needs subtitles because some people watch videos without sound. This only affects the algorithm in that people watch videos more because of the subtitles, those who watch without sound.

Captions are good for the explore page since it can help categorize the video in specific sections on users feed. However it is vital that you use hashtags with it.
