I’m trying to understand backlinks better. How important are backlinks for improving a website’s SEO and search rankings, and what makes a backlink valuable? Also, is it better to focus on a few high-quality backlinks or build a larger number of relevant ones?

Backlinks basically help because they make your site look more trusted and credible to Google.

Think of it like this, its a recommendation from one site to another. If many sites that are quality are recommending you, then it will help if your site is optimized and ready when traffic comes. If they come and see bad site, then it wont help much and they bounce. So do that optimization first and then value quality over quantity on some backlinks next.

Quality is more important than quantity when it comes to backlinks. A good topical link coming from a website that receives relevant traffic can be worth much more than several dozen links,

Yes, but I think that relevance and quality should be valued equally with trustworthiness. It only takes one good link on an important topic to make a difference.

Backlinks are like channels through which sites communicate with each other. They are robust and have a lot of ingredients or lean and without much substance. You should focus on quality over quantity as quality backlinks can boost your overall page performance and ranking in SEO

Backlink is refrence. Suppose you are conducting a research study and adding references to strengthen that research. Consequently, those references are more trustworthy than not incorporating sources from other studies.

It's just a green flag to push your site further on the SERP
