I'm trying to determine how difficult it will be to outrank some ecommerce websites for certain keywords. They all have between 500 and 1000 backlinks but the number of root domains is very low compared to the total number of backlinks. Number one has approximately 1000 backlinks with 100 linking root domains. He owns another website with site wide links pointing to his money website (this accounts for almost 800 backlinks) and the other backlinks come from directories mosly. The website with the site wide backlinks isn't something spectacular with extremely high DA/PA or something. All the other guys in the top 10 have something similarly going on: one of the websites in their backlink profile accounts for 80-90% of their total backlinks and the rest comes from directory submissions or straight out spam. My questions are: is it difficult to outrank these websites (knowing all the other metrics are pretty shitty)? How does Google treat sitewide links? Should I aim for 1500 tier 1 backlinks from 500-750 root domains or should I copy (and improve upon) the tactics of the competition and build a couple of websites with sitewide links and 500 'normal' backlinks as tier 1 and then build some tier 2's and blast those? Since I'm planning to on building most of my tier 1's manually, building 500 is completely different from building 1500 backlinks. But on the other hand I'm afraid those sitewide links will come back to bite me.
