HOW did you quit drinking

I’m a fit guy—six-pack and all—but I think family pressure has gotten the best of me. I get what you’re saying. I’ve always turned to fitness for comfort, but it’s not working anymore. After a good workout session, I find myself craving a drink. It’s literally become my life—I work out just so I can drink even more. its just a matter of time before i loose my physic and my house. because of the rate at which im drinking on average i send $3000 per month on drinking for the past 9 months. stoped therapy because i was spnding $275 per week and it wasent even working they just keep giving me different meds every week to see what works. and funny enough the best drink is after my therapy session.
I call bullshit on that.

$3000 per month is $100 per day.

You could get 2 bottles of Vodka in the US for $100 - you could actually get even more than that, but for the sake of argument, let's do 2 small bottles of 2 x 500 ml (1 Liter)

  • 1 Liter Bottle of Vodka: Around 1,840-2,450 calories. (2 x calories if you want to spend the whole $100)
  • 1 Liter Bottle of Whiskey: Around 2,200-3.000 calories. (2 x calories if you want to spend the whole $100)
  • 1 Liter Bottle of Tequila: Around 2,100-2,2000 calories. (2 x calories if you want to spend the whole $100)
  • 70 standard beers: Around 10,000 calories. (Because you can get them for $100)

To maintain a six-pack, you need to be in a slight but consistent calorie deficit. Please don't come with this bullshit story that you are drinking all these calories down and maintain a six-pack at the same time. It is impossible.

In the US, the average adult man is about 5'9" (175 cm) and 197 pounds (89 kg).

Daily calorie needs for the “average” man:

  • Sedentary (little to no exercise) → ~2,400 calories/day
  • Moderately active (some exercise, walking, light sports) → ~2,600–2,800 calories/day
  • Active (daily exercise, physical job) → ~3,000 calories/day

So there is no way for you to drink and eat at the same time because calories first come from the food you eat but you claim to flush all these calories down your throat from drinking only, and maintain a six-pack (which requires a calorie deficit).

The entire story looks shaky because these things don't add up.

23 years i drank, i couldnt drink whiskey anymore, my ribs would pull apart in pain, i blacked out everytime. wine, beer. you guys might think this is odd, marijuana is still not legal in my state, i just started smoking CBD out of a pipe, stopped drinking immediately. 6 years ago

the story looks shaky because it's written by AI

but in any case you are right, unless this guy is chiseled like Anatoly, visible abs mainly depend on bodyfat/bloat. my abs disappear the moment I enter a period of a caloric surplus/bloat. Alcohol accelerates that like 3x

Exactly.

I noticed the long hyphens too in his text, which AI usually creates, so it might be another fake pity story as we've seen here in the past.

The numbers don't act up regardless.

I felt in love with an amazing beautiful and funny girl, 15 years younger than me, that fact helped me quit the alcohol flow. Nothing more! I just stopped drink at all, and I don't want it! Now I have been completely healthy for 6 months. No jokes!

I quit because if I kept drinking, I would die.

I made a decision, no meetings, nobody holding my hand, I just manned up and grew a pair.

Maybe not the way everyone should go, and it is never bad to ask for help, but that worked for me.
This was the same for me. I am honest with everyone here on BHW. I had kicked it back in 2010, and then when my mom was dying, I went back to it and kept going.

Now, I have been clean for two months, and I don't go to meetings or anything at all; if I touch a drink, I will die as well. If that doesn't stop you, then nothing will.

I will say this to everyone here: if I could go back in time, I would never have started drinking, as the damage it can do physically and emotionally is horrific.

Learn from me, be good to yourself, and have fun in positive ways, as you deserve better. Love you all!!!

it's all fun and games until you start to realize you have a problem and alcohol is controlling you, how did you control or stop drinking?

My alcohol use was linked to stress management and insomnia. So I started to to the gym and at first kept alcohol for the weekend only. Then I was able to quit fully.

Especially when burying dead bodies in your neighbors yard.

If you have a problem, admit and take steps to fix it. It's up to you to choose the best steps forward.

Quitting a bad habit isn't always a 1 and done. I quit smoking multiple times, I learned something about myself and my habit each time... The last attempt stuck and haven't smoked since. It's been since, like... 4 minutes ago!! Just kidding, it's been many years, double digits.

since you understand that this is a problem and it has to be fixed
so start by drinking less,
slowly and steadily reduce this amount
if you break this rule then fine yourself and give some money to charity
but the fine should not be so huge that you go bankrupt and not so little that you do not care at all
it should be as such that you can daily break the rule but your pocket will feel the squeeze that it takes upon your finances

hopefully this would help

i know a guy who started a habit of cursing so he did the same, charity but not to big and not too small
and he quit cursing
he started again after a few months and started doing this again and he got rid of cursing

you can do it

I want to bring this up. There is no right or wrong way to stop drinking. If you need help and support, please get it and save your life, as we have lost a lot of people here over the years. Realize you're not alone. If you ever need to talk or want to vent, feel free to DM me at any time. GB

Simple: I have no alcohol at home.
I only drink outside or on holiday, but not much.

I’m not trying to make things up — I’m genuinely looking for help. Maybe I’ve overshared, and that’s why you’re feeling skeptical. I get it though; I’m a skeptical person myself. when it comes to online threads so notting personal.

one of the best advice I’ve got from this thread came from the @BassTrackerBoats Honestly, I just want to live, and doing research and seeing drinking actually kills is an eye opener. I’m starting to realize that drinking might actually kill me. That scares me, even though I had a drink today. Still, I was very self-aware and made sure it was less. Call it weakness if you want, but at least i am trying . but all I see here is a wonderful community of people offering help on what works for them and you never know.

It doesn’t matter what others think — I keep watching this thread because I’ve gotten so much valuable input that I’m trying to fit into my lifestyle to see if it works. And yes, there are months when I spend more than the amount i mentioned and im not a rich guy! im literally destroying what i have build through out my life to have a drink and its not me looking for pitty i know i can do better i probaly need a nudge.

Thank you so much. I’m really trying, and I pray to God that I find my way. It’s scary to see myself in this situation — I used to look at people who couldn’t stop drinking and wonder why they couldn’t just control it. Now that I’m the one struggling, it’s frightening to realize how hard it truly is.

Exactly.

Thanks for sharing — I’m going through the same thing but worse. It’s scary realizing how hard it is to stay in control, but hearing about your progress reminds me it’s possible. Much respect for your honesty and strength — I’m trying to follow that path too.

My final point is that my wife and most of my family can drink responsibly, but I, on the other hand, struggle with it, so that is why I don't drink. I want to live a long life and I know that will not happen with my relationship with alcohol. Remember, everyone has a bad relationship with some substance [Sugar, fast food, tobacco, drugs, whatever it is]. I am currently a work in progress, and I think it's healthy for all of us to talk about it instead of hiding and being silent, as that is what kills us.

I am pulling for you, and sorry if this offends anyone. My prayers are with you, and feel free to dm me anytime.

If you've been drinking long enough, you'll realize you have all the reasons you need to quit - from lost time and finances to bad health, relationship problems, and generally impaired judgments.
Quitting is a personal decision. I quit after a long hospitalization period due to complications caused by excessive drinking and smoking. No rehab, no 12-step meetings, or mentors. Just remember how lucky I am o be alive today and I never need intoxication again. You MUST also try to adjust your social circle as well. Limit association with your former binge buddies, who didn't add any value to your social/financial life, as much as you can.
Personally, I find this sober life more meaningful, happier, and I even find it easier to do things that seemed to difficult to do when i was still drinking. Quitting may seem difficult but it can be done. All the best.

Not my personal experience but I realized a pattern from some friends which were drinking heavily. For them it was mostly their circle of friends they were surrounded with. As soon as their friends changed they stopped drinking or at least way less. If you are already drinking when you are completly alone than its a different story of course. Get some help bro, nothing to be ashamed of

Every drink = spike of acetaldehyde, which mutates DNA + kills liver cells. Body repairs at first, but scars build up til organ stops working.
Add brain shrinkage + nerve damage ~> higher risk of cancer, dementia, stroke.
And reduced productivity due hang'overs as well as the constant FINANCIAL drain too, bro. Not worth it.

yep alcohol is a tough drug for sure research the purification rundown very helpful

I saved so much money when I quit, money was my motivation!

I’m glad I never tried drinking or drugs before. I’ve seen a lot of friends struggle with alcohol... some of them got clean, had a few setbacks, but they’re all on track now. Others switched to mixed substances like cocaine, heroin and alcohol…

The ones who got back on track actively looked for help and received it. The ones who didn’t want help had already been struggling for a long time, and staying high or drunk seemed to make life feel a little less stressful. I’m speaking from experience, having talked with several of them.

Edit: You have to want it badly to get clean.... otherwise, the next few years will be full of setbacks...
