How did you find your expertise (focus)?

Background:

I'm involved with 15+ major ventures/clients in different areas. I'm a full-time student, have a bunch of shit going on with the IRS. I'm about to spend a month recruiting for a "real job", and will spend most of my time on that.

For the most part, I'm happy and proud of my accomplishments. But I frequently work (and I mean actually work) 14-16 hours/day and still I'm not truly #1 or even a real expert at anything.

I read Deep Work by Cal Newport recently and realized my life is the exact opposite of focused. It's frustrating because it feels like my efforts are diluted.



Question:

If you've been in a similar position, how did you eventually find your area of expertise/focus?

How long did it take and what is your advice?

I have not found it yet. Just hanging around. I had tried to recruit people full time in past but failed.

I find it quite hard to focus to be honest, and I have been doing IM for a number of years. So I do my best to focus, and if I can give you some tips, they are below:
- time yourself: so if you notice you regularly spend hours browsing aimlessly, reduce that,
- as we are here to make money, focus more on the highest ROI; push what makes the most money, neglect what does not,
- last but not least, focus and get an expert at what you like the most; the journey will be easier.

That's been my approach.

The thing is, it's hard to know what will be the highest ROI long term. I have some money invested in a VR startup that won't return for years--but when it does it make be a huge ROI vs. me putting more money into fb ads is a medium ROI now, but long term nothing special.
