How did they find me ?

Two weeks ago I bought a domain name and started an experimental web site. There are no external links either to or from the site so no-one, aside from the registrar and hosting company should know it exists.

There are no email addresses on the site - either visible or in the code - save for the php file that handles the contact form.

This morning I received two spam emails. They look like tests to see if they are opened.

I'm puzzled how anyone even knows the site exists. Anyone know ?

If the domain name was registered before, there might be a database that has your domain name in it, and scrapers go over and over it.

do your email start with contact or admin ??
 
From the company where you bought the domain. It's easy for hackers to track your location
 
There is a daily database of registered domains - zone files so they got the domain. Then test a few common variations
 
Spammers have set the trackers on the new domain registrations through whois dbs.
 
Have you removed whois protection or not have whois protection?

Did you got common names in mail box like admin @ websitename, contact @ websitename if so its just auto generated email spam
 
There is a new service on here listing new domains registered, or something similar.

years back it was thought registrars had staff selling data. Think back then how many emails you used to get from random services 24 hours after you bought a domain, or 10 months later with the fake registration due renewal for $59.99

Each whois database contains list of newly registered domain names. DomainTools has a service that tracks all newly registered domains. Named Domain Discovery Feed gives real time information in the form of a running feed and lists all new domains.

It seems to me that the hosting allowed this. Does this give you trouble?

This. It doesn't matter where you register the domain; once it's done, they will spam your inbox. :D
