I was wondering... how do you make a site with a new concept popular? I know it's not SEO.. i mean, Facebook didn't start with users looking for "social network" in google.. or Fiverr with "Earn 5 bucks"

How have they done it?

viral. it takes off on its own. the difference between a site that turns viral and one that doesn't? sometimes nothing. its pure luck and timing.

try reading this,. helped me get upto 4000 UV a day

You have to create a HYPE around your idea/website.

It is WAY harder than SEO.

Ok i agree with you.. it has to go viral. But there is something before a site goes viral.. i mean, its not goin viral with you telling your 5 buddies you made a site with a great idea..
so.. maybe e-mail marketing? adwords campaigns? video marketing? i know once you hit "media & press" it mostly depends on the quality of the idea to go viral.. but, how do you get there?

It's a combination of a great idea, the right time, and the right advertising.

Viral is a stupid word I hate using because it really doesn't mean anything.

Viral means a great idea that makes people keep talking about it.

I don't quite understand how they do it either..I mean I know it goes viral..but how exactly does it get to that stage?

I mean, its pretty much impossible just by telling your mates. For example, day YouTube was created, and they told one or two of their mates, deep down they would have thought it was shit and not gone round telling everyone. Facebook is a little different because it was for universities only, and then eventually they opened it up for everyone, so I understand Facebook, but not YouTube, or Metacafe, or Vimeo, or Digg, or anything like that.

I have a service site that I am going to make viral by offering my service "fre e" to clients who refer their friends. In my case, I have the idea... it's awesome, but I need some more startup $.

Sounds very good Hannah, good luck!

Only one question.. How are you getting those "first clients" to find your service site? advertising? and what kind of advertising?

Thanks and as far as the first clients, I have a service that they want/need and all of their friends are in the industry, so they all want/need it. My job to show them that.

First clients are promo, CL works

i'd say its only "something that people keeps talking about" ... there has been a lot of crap that has gone viral by "accident" ( i guess that is why drey2k think its stupid)

Now.. iguess if you are a little creative you could use stupid stuff to make your business go viral. for example, if i was fiverr i would tape myself saying "i will spank a police officer for $5" and then doing it... and let the officer tackle me down and get me arrested... that would go viral and make the site famous :p

word of mouth.

viral is just an inane term for word of mouth.. I wonder how it caught on... oh yeah, word of mouth.

gettin hype around something is EASY! I got huge hype around my facebook account haha, i got interviewed and it was on the news.

And can you imagine, i presented myself as anonymous!

You should just make a social site and put up HUGE ammount of posters and throw the ball to visitors "now you guys run this site, i'm just maitaining it and paying hosting bill" and the site will grow itself.

i think hype also.. i remember the first product i purchased was mainly based on hype.. it triggered my need and got me all excited about it.. too bad i spent the money on that instead of investing in my own product :(

Money. You can have a good idea but you've got to advertise it, chances are it's not going to go viral on its own. Most of those big sites lost money before they made money.

This is true as well. There are a lot of things that go into the success of anything. Money is surely one thing that can grow a site.
