Download a software which provides for "secure delete". You can google it. There's a lot of software that does it.

If you did a shift+delete then there are very few chances you would get it back. If you install software now you can secure future deletions but the previous ones are gone

You can perform a low level format or use a sw that wipes the files and fill the erased sectors with dumb data. Search for prevent recovery (there is a good tool in clean-space)

Delete the files, and download something big, to make your hard drive full. In this way, the bits will be overwritten.

For Windows: Still works for Windows 7 and 8 too
"When you delete files or folders, the data is not initially removed from the hard disk. Instead, the space on the disk that was occupied by the deleted data is "deallocated." After it is deallocated, the space is available for use when new data is written to the disk. Until the space is overwritten, it is possible to recover the deleted data by using a low-level disk editor or data-recovery software."

"To overwrite deleted data on a volume by using Cipher.exe, use the /w switch with the cipher command. Use the following steps:
    1. Quit all programs.
    2. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
    3. Type cipher /w:driveletter:\foldername, and then press ENTER. Specify the drive and the folder that identifies the volume that contains the deleted data that you want to overwrite. Data that is not allocated to files or folders will be overwritten. This permanently removes the data. This can take a long time if you are overwriting a large space. "

Well you can either use software or destroy the drive - your choice I guess.

If you have been looking at illegal porn take your hard drive out of your computer, invest in a sledgehammer and smash your hard drive in, put the remains on a fire. Once the fire has burnt out collect all the ashes in a plastic bag, weight the plastic bag with bricks, then throw the plastic bag into the sea. This should keep you safe from the police, well DHSellerUK said it worked for him.

If you put your anus near the hdd and fart, the fart gases should be enough to fill the hard drive with many bits and pieces overriding everything on it
