As an example of topical, I deliberately chose several controversial sites in November 2016 for a client with a political blog in the USA and the impressions and clicks went through the roof for a few weeks. Still about 60% higher than they were now almost 18 months later.

When you rank for an irrelevant thing, your impressions would be high but click throughs poor.
