Also the backlinks are nothing special except a few. Is it worth buying relying just on Ahrefs DR?

hidden PBNs maybe?? I don't know, I was just guessing...
If a hidden pbn doesn't show up on Ahrefs is because crawlers are blocked, so Ahrefs won't take it into account for DR as they cant see the links

Quality referring domains. I've seen a University site today that was DR 72 with only 150 RD.

I see...

I've noticed this to with Ahrefs DR. I've seen DR 49 sites with just 1 RD.

Do you think domains with high DR but low RD are still valuable? I've been passing them up but am tempted to register a few.

I’ve seen sites with DR 50 or so that only have 10 backlinks.
But the Site had a Backlink from a DA 94 Site That was only linking to 2000 domains.
Ahrefs said, the lower the number of domains the site links to, the more heavily it impacts DA.
That's why you do not only look at DA

The metrics you see in tools such as Ahrefs shouldn't be the basis for buying a domain or site. Manually checking everything is always a good idea. Check everything really well.

DR is just an external metric that's not used by Google. I wouldn't even look at it. If a domain you are looking at has one very high quality link, sure it could be a good domain.
