How can the goverment track you?

Lets say that you are using a VPN, can the goverment still track you? And if they can how do they do it?

What if the VPN service is in Russia and the US goverment cannot get information about this user?

What would they do?

The government can track you down with the help of your internet provider.
 
Research the concept of Fourteen Eyes in respect to VPNs. Basically if a VPN provider has a business in a country where the government can compel the VPN provider to hand over any logs for a specific user, then yes the government can get details about what a specific VPN user accessed while on the VPN.

Please note this is a simplified answer and I recommend doing additional reading if the topic is interesting to you.

In addition to this, note that trying to hide from the law is generally harder than trying to hide from, for example, Google.

For example, getting domain privacy for WHOIS will keep you private from Google. However, in a legal situation, the domain registrar may be sent a subpoena, which may result in that domain registrar being obligated to disclose your registration information.

I'm not sure I agree with this. Google has tons of data from all around the net and the easy-to-use tools to run correlations on it (see BigQuery).

Not what he meant. Google can only get what's publcily available on your server. The goverment may potentially get what's private through different methods such as getting your requests from your I. provider, or demanding access to your server company, etc.

That is also a valid point. Would edit that statement to this:

The point being that information that might normally be kept private is often disclosed in response to subpoenas or other legal/government authority. The VPN that the OP mentioned, for example, is run by a person or organization who might give out your information in response to a subpoena. For legal activities, that is mostly irrelevant; it is potentially an issue if you're trying to hide from the law.

When you use VPN, VPN will create a virtual tunnel connecting you and the end node.
The Data still have to go through your area ISP's infrastructure to get to the internet. The gov can contact ISPs for the logs. No way you can hide your information :).

Second that, google is a lot harder

@OP : They use deep inspection to get you. Basically, a man in the middle attack between you and the internet provider. They intercept the data, and analyze it.

But, to do that, they need to target you specifically. So, unless you are doing something real shady like drugs, terrorism and similar stuff, they will just let it slide.
 
That why when choosing a VPN best use a non log VPN .

And one that been court and fully recogised for privacy .

.I recon if you done something that the law big boys didn' like no matter what , your in shit.

There just use big laws massive inducements big courts public shame your eventually be caught

Using VPN can give you better privacy, but not necessarily 100% hide your information. Find VPN services with no log policy plus encryption. This article can be useful:

Every time I see someone overly paranoid about the government tracking they're doing something slightly blackhat and think it's the biggest deal ever and they'll end up in prison or something because of it.
 
If you ran everything out of a Russian physically server hosted IP and did not fuck up even once you would be fine.

Sadly everyone fucks up.

Either stop what you are doing or deal with the risk factor.

Good news is you are probably not the target you think you are.
