I focus on making internal linking clear and useful for news sites. I link related articles to guide readers through a story and add context. I use descriptive anchor texts so users and search engines understand what the linked page covers. I create evergreen cornerstone articles that support new content and link back to them often. I regularly update links to avoid broken paths and keep relevance. I place links where they add value, such as "Read More" or related stories sections. This keeps readers engaged and helps search engines crawl the site better.

The question I want to ask you guys is that How do you handle internal linking for your news site?

Two things made the biggest difference for me in high-volume publishing.

Link by query, not by topic. Pull the GSC query data for the pages you already have. Find the ones ranking 5–20 for a term and use the query as an anchor to point new articles at those. The embedding-based "closest related article" feature is good for relevance, but it doesn't know which page is close to ranking.

Cap inbound links per target. It's easy to end up with 40 internal links pointing to one cornerstone page and two to everything else. I keep a crawl export next to the GSC export so I can see the inbound count per URL and distribute them deliberately.

For news articles specifically, the automatic "related stories" block at the bottom is far less effective than one contextual link in the second or third paragraph. It's the same page, but with very different weight.

I usually keep internal linking fairly simple on news sites. I link from newer stories to the most relevant background or evergreen piece, especially when a topic is likely to develop over time. I also try to use natural anchor text rather than forcing keywords. One thing I’ve found useful is revisiting older articles after publishing a major update and adding links to the newer coverage. It helps readers follow the story while also keeping the site structure connected.

I also keep an eye on search console's internal-links report to see which pages are receiving links and whether important content is getting overlooked.

I don't follow a fixed number of internal links. If the link genuinely helps the reader, I'II include it.

For news sites, I think freshness makes internal linking a bit different from a normal evergreen site. I'd try to connect a new story to the most relevant background articles, while also making sure older pages can lead readers back to newer updates where it makes sense. That creates a useful path through a topic instead of just adding links for the sake of SEO. I also think keeping an eye on older links is important as stories get updated or become outdated.

Internal linking on news sites involves ensuring that links are appropriate and relevant, linking new stories to related articles, evergreen articles, and important topics.

Updating links on older articles can also help improve site navigation and findability of content.

For news sites, I’d link by topic cluster and story timeline. Older evergreen pages can support new stories, while fresh articles should link back to the main background piece when it adds context.

For news sites focus on linking related stories naturally within the article especially from newer posts to strong evergreen pages.

I have found it useful to connect new updates with the older stories around the same topic, instead of letting those older pages sit untouched.
It keeps the whole story connected and gives Google a clearer picture of the topic.

The GSC query approach makes way more sense than just linking random “related” posts everywhere. I’d still keep a few manual links for the bigger stories tho.

When it comes to news sites, I would stick to keeping things context-based and timely. Make sure to link new articles to evergreen content, while linking older content to newer articles that provide additional context.

Keeping the links relevant is probably the biggest thing. I’d rather have a few useful internal links than add them just for the sake of SEO.

I usually link to related stories that add context to the current article I also try to keep the anchor text clear and update older articles with links to newer relevant content

I will keep internal links heavily focused towards money pages and supporting posts with different anchors and aggressive contextual linking. The main key is keeping the link flow natural so it does look forced.

I’d keep it simple, link new stories back to the strongest older coverage and update those older pages when the story moves. way more useful than stuffing “related posts” everywhere.

For news sites I keep internal links mainly topic based & contextual, I link related stories, strengthen evergreen pages & regularly update older articles with relevant new links rather than forcing links everywhere

for the most part i stick with the basics nd try to make it relevant. in the case of news websites i prefer linking the key story to old articles which will give some sort of context nd at the same time update old articles when there is an article that is linkked to that story.
