Ok. I have a friend (here in the US) whose family owns a manufacturing company in China. I was talking to him trying to figure out how we can use this resource to make us money here in the states. Basically the company can make anything made here but way cheaper. Does anyone have any ideas on how i can use this company resource? (sorry if this is in the wrong place)

electronics normally sell well.... especially laptops as most people wont ever look inside one because of how its made... you could get the same outside and similar compenents inside but just cheaper and make some bank.... would have to still function the same and everything and be 100% identical for 99% of users.... but then the few refunds you do get you just refund straight away :)

thanks. i will look into this area and see what will need to happen or if it is something feasible and cost effective. being that we are on a shoestring budget, this may be too big right now. when i was talkin to him, he was saying that what we needed to do was find buyers. you know? like someone who buys for big companies like Costco, Wal-mart, etc. Does anyone know where I could find these people? Cuz then we would be able to find some product with a greater profit margin and then have it mass produced in China and sent over.

BTW, thanks for the quick response.

try to get things like ipods or small items that you can resell on ebay for a profit, then as sales continue, you can start to look at bigger items or bulk then, at least this is what i would do. Just check ebay to see what is selling well, see how you can get similar products, and sell them for greater profits

Piece of advice, stay away from electronics. From personal experience, when getting them to design an electronic product to your specs it will go wrong.
like anything, products need testing before release, think battery life, casings, waterproof, memory etc. Personally I would say steer well clear of electronics.

yea, im actually lookin at some items right now and plan on doing just what you said. i wanna take my shoestring budget and get it to a point where i could make some BIG buys. I was just throwing it out there just in case someone knew someone who may know someone else that may be looking for a new supplier from China. lol.

Now this will take some shoeleather work or phone work ... I know a guy that will go around and sell product in large quantities and when he has a shipping container filled he orders it from China .. when the container comes in he distributes to product and the people pay 50% upfront that covers his cost of product and shipping.

    :)

thanks gimme. i hear on that one. my friend was telling me how he personally lost like 100k 2 years ago because he actually had a buddy that brought him a idea that they thought would be a good seller. he paid for all the testing and to have the samples made but when it was all said and done, they didnt find the right buyer to buy enoungh units for them to place a order. well now Costco is selling the exact item they were trying to push 2 years ago for $130 a piece.

Beat a 400K loss due to a full shipment being returned. No warranty on the china side, simply assured that they were ok. They all seemed fine for 2 months and then everything went wrong. Cost in shipping was 20 pounds per item for collecting them as well, ended up losing so much money due to shitty chinese electronics. At the time I had a competitor who I recently spoke to and he said exactly the same thing. Be careful, the samples are never the final product, they are simply a very well made example of the product ;)

Although I'm not overwhelmed by the paper clip idea I do believe you're on the right track and ought to look for something with few or no moving parts. I agree with staying away from electronics. You also want to consider staying away from anything with the potential for product liability issues... things like toys, kids products or anything someone could claim hurt them.

I'd look for something that people are already using every day and see what kind of super deal I could get. Think Ginsu knives... the granddaddy of cheap, ordinary products people bought by the truck load.

Or, what products does the company already make that aren't currently imported here? Or maybe a component for an American product that you could supply in bulk, cheaper than the manufacturer gets it now.

Don't forget to pay particular attention to the product and packaging material to avoid any comical but potentially devastating "Engrish" problems.

Remember to find the market first ... you don't have enough R & D cash to make your own ... IDEA ... take a hot selling product and tweak it a little .. lots of plastic shit on the market .. take someting and add a handle to it or just make it a different shape .. that is what all those thieving ? countries LOL do anyway ..find an American product and duplicate it.

    :)

thanks guys. i appreciate all the comments ive gotten on this. you guys have given me some ideas that i need to follow up on.

@ gimme: all i can say is ouch on the 400k. man, thats some serious cheese to lose

@ johnny: that was the problem my friend had and a tough lesson for him. so we are lookin at current products and see what "components" we can make cheaper and come from that angle like "springer" said.

once again. thanks for the tips and comments guys.thanks given to all
