To answer your question on "good" editing software it's a matter of opinion, but from my work in the industry

Best of Mac - FCP X, FCP 7, Avid Media Composer/Premier Pro, iMovie.
Best of PC - Avid/Premier, Sony Vegas Pro, staring directly at the sun, Windows Movie Maker.

I would suggest adobe premiere and a lot of patience and time. There's some tutorials out there to do almost everything.

In addition to the softwares mentioned above. Adobe After Effects is the best software for video production for two simple reasons. One, it has features that can help you produce almost anything Hollywood films can produce. Two, it has way more tutorials available than any other softwares for free.
