There are tools for this, but its hard even with tools to find something rerally valuable. You can buy from resellers who have experience, tools and budget for it. There are few guys here selling good expired domains.

Not worth learning the ropes, unless you are planning to really invest time and money into this. It's easier to just buy it.
If you want auction domains, get Domcop, Majestic, Ahrefs. Then learn how to check them properly. Backlink profile, anchors, historic anchors, Archive.org, Whois Domaintools screenshots, hosting history.
If you want scraped domains, add a scraper or some domain list database to the mix. And you will never find anything way too decent regardless.
So overall monthly subscriptions to absolutely make sure that you have all the tools required to tell with 99% certainty whether the domain is good or not is at well, around $200. Plus time investment, etc.

I must be using ahrefs wrong, its backlink checker and domain rating score have not been very accurate in real live tests?

Not true. Businesses fail and let their domain expire. They have no idea about the domain power.
Organizations close and let their .org domain expire.
And many more different examples

^this. Do you think when Coca cola is running a promo "Happy new year 2018" on separate domain they care to 301 or renew it after the promo is over? Or when dentists are having conference in Ottawa they care to redirect the ottawadentists2020.com to denverdentists2021.com? Or when family owned restaurant is closing doors the grandma care that the domain is worth $150?

Well you can use domcop. They give every detail about the expired domain. Its age, seo factors, backlink profile and more.
