Hi,

On one of my websites (the website is exclusively targeted towards visitors from Romania), I have very high traffic generated by some bots with Polish IP addresses, although I believe the IP address is forged (IP spoofing). The bot-generated traffic amounts to over 10,000 visits per month. This is affecting both the website, the server, and the data in Google Analytics.

The website runs on WordPress and is installed on a shared server with Cloudlinux. I've installed a plugin that allows blocking page views for requests with Polish IP addresses, but it doesn't help at all. The traffic remains the same.

I've also tried passing the website through cloudflare.com, but it doesn't make a difference. The traffic remains unchanged.

Another solution could be using the Firewall feature from cloudflare.com to block Polish IPs, but the cost is more than I can afford to pay, especially considering I don't make any money from this site.

What other free solutions do you think might exist? How can I block unknown robots? And I don't understand why they are coming to my site?

You can't block them completely. Use Wordfence.

Any cloaker should fit for your needs. The idea behind it is simply to block unwanted visitors or send them to a different website while your targeted traffic from the country you wish can pass. You can also add some custom stuff for example check the refferer. You can use that if you do seo for example and only want to show visitors that came from google the actual page. All other visits like direct type traffic etc don't get the content.

i think there's a way around with your .htaccess read on this and there are plugins you can checkout. Do they visit random pages?

Wordfense would do the job as suggested by others also, also enable cloudflare extreme mode.

There are two ways I can think of to handle this.

First is to install a honeypot on your website if you can. A honeypot is a hidden link that only bots can see. When a bot follows the link the bots IP is flagged automatically and any further requests will be blocked starting immediately. There is even a movement behind Project Honey Pot. Honey Pots are generally free to implement but if you use a plugin it may cost you. You can read more here (be sure to look at the FAQ):

Second is to install the 7G firewall from jeff starr. It is pretty comprehensive but it goes in your .htaccess file so you have to be pretty technically inclined. The firewall is free and you can find the 7G firewall here:

Regards!

I set the honey pot. I wait for your results :).

I have created recently for a client webserver that checks if a user is using proxy and it redirects user based on the results.. Most of the bots have timezone and device mismatch as well as mismatch between webRTC ip and ipv4 ip address..

Addressing unwanted bot traffic on your website:

  1. Edit .htaccess file to block IPs or countries.
  2. Use rate limiting to deter excessive requests.
  3. Install security plugins like Wordfence or Sucuri.
  4. Custom filters based on patterns.
  5. Check robots.txt for proper crawler access.
  6. Filter out bot traffic in Google Analytics.
  7. Explore other CDNs with bot mitigation.
  8. Continuously monitor and adjust strategies.
  9. Contact hosting support for assistance.
Unwanted bot motivations vary, but these steps can help manage the issue.

What is cloaker?
Cloaker is a tool for redirecting your actual users to your offerpage, rest clicks like bots, proxy/VPN,etc to safepage. There are many good cloakers available in market you can google for best cloaker for google , bing or facebooks ads, as per your need and you will find one.
