just getting into buying domains to set up my pr network and im seeing lots of domains with pr 4, 5, 8 and with no backlinks. they pass the google ake pr test, i check in ahrefs as well. makes no sense. anyone care to explain

301 redirects would be a likely scenario.

Fake pr tests suck. I manually check the site through info:domain.com query after verifying it's still indexed, and check the pr toolbar addon before the page is redirected to the expired domain page.

I check the backlink\anchor profile after that.

well today google is very restrictive to display backlinks , if one site have 100k bl display in max 200 , you able to see all only in WT but only owner see this due site verification ( ask to owner this info ) , but if no backlink in google and ahrefs probable PR is fake .

best

If there is pr5 without any back links then you know its fake. Make sure to look closely at the links to the site to make sure it looks the part. PR isn't the only thing you should be looking at when building your network - look at ahrefs and open site explorer for domain authority numbers. It is a better representation of authority.

thanks. ahrefs free version is a bot limiting. do you know any other sites that are good for checkin backlinks?

Hi, google have not updated the PR since february. So, check it with majestic seo (use historic index) to check the backlinks count also check the DA of the domain, if it is <10 don't buy it, if it is 10+ then you can buy it.

thanks for everyones help. one domain l looked at through MOZ shows robots.txt blocked and tons of pages with http status as 301. so i presume thats the 301 redirect scam. domain auth is 18 and page auth is 1. def a scam i think

I don't go for anything lower than pr2, and I've found the sites that have good backlink profiles have a PA\DA of over 20, even if they're only pr 2-3.

Yeah that's fake domain stats. After they pull the 301's, it'll be more worthless than it is right now.

You'll want to see 20+ page\domain authority. Like I said above, I'm finding plenty of good pr 2-3 expired domains that fall into this authority range.

PR5 is going to cost you quite a bit more understandably. I even see people trying to outbid each other for fake PR domains, just because they get greedy and don't look at all the details, so definitely check out the page\domain authority before even looking into the back links.

As alternatesword mentioned, PR hasn't been updated in many many months, so even if it's listed as a legit PR5, you'll want to see the backlink trend to see how much it's dropped, as when PR is updated, it may not even be a PR5 domain any longer.

ok, im looking at trueqmx.com majestic is telling me page title is n/a redirect and last crawl result is 301 perrdirect. is this the 301 scam then?

is that redirect maybe something to do with godaddy holding page as it has pr3 then after redirect is 0. domain redirets to trueqmx.com/?nr=0

Sorry to intervine, but are PRs still viabile when researching a domain? I have't taken that factor into consideration in a long time.

Page Rank is still a factor in Google's Algorithm for ranking.

Being as it hasn't been updated in a long time, it shouldn't be the only factor when looking at buying expired domains though. If you can see high PR\PA\DA backlinks, it'd be unwise not to take that into consideration.

It might have lot all its backlinks, its been over 6 to 7 months no pr update so it still have, dont worry once you see new update its gone!!

I manually check the site through info:domain.com

about this... why am I unable to find a single expired domain that is still indexed? am I doing something wrong? or is it difficult to find indexed ones?

I am not saying that you shouldn't take into consideration the PR, just saying that i had some pretty good result when rellying only on backlink quality. Maybe i lost a few beats by not taking everything into consideration, but worked ok . :) thanks though i will try to include that in future research.

Well, it depends on how long ago the domain expired i guess, it might be hard to find something indexed if it has been a long time. Also, take into consideration the posibility that the site got de-indexed (banned) by Google for doing something naughty, which would be a good reason why it is expired :). It is alsways a risk when you buy a domain that is not indexed by google and then find out that it useless.

Either the links were lost or its fake PR. This question proves why PR is so useless. PR should only be used as a gauge for checking a sites backlinks to verify the PR number can be justified. Backlinks are everything PR is just a silly number.

I'd say most likely the sellers are 301 redirecting to temporarily boost the PR and sell off domains, then switching the direction of the 301 to the next one after making the sale. A friend of mine used this example to explain to me why PR really isn't a relevant factor, among some other reasons. I'd go with newly expired domains with decent backlink profiles over high pr - with a little work you can raise up the PR's, but with 0 backlinks to start you'll have to do a lot more work IMO. Ahrefs is pretty accurate in my experience, so I'd definitely trust that over the easily faked PR.
