Hello everyone,

I'm currently operating a video hosting platform (similar to DoodStream) and am in the cold-start phase, facing bottlenecks in user growth and traffic acquisition. I'd like to ask experienced peers in this field: How can such a platform effectively attract users and traffic in its early stages?

Methods I've tried so far:

  • SEO Optimization: Basic keyword optimization is underway, but competition is fierce, and results are slow.
  • Social Media: Posted promotional content on social channels, but conversion rates are very low.
  • Forum Promotion: Introduced the service on relevant webmaster forums, but the impact has been minimal.
  • Outreach to Webmasters: Contacted video site owners via Gmail, but hardly received any responses.
Main challenges I'm facing:

  1. Backlink Building: Email outreach to webmasters rarely gets replies.
  2. Initial Content Source: Without sufficient content, it's hard to attract users, but without users, no one uploads content—a classic chicken-and-egg problem.
  3. Differentiation: Compared to established platforms like DoodStream, how can a new platform stand out?
Specific questions I'd love insights on:

  • Which promotion channels are most suitable for such platforms in the early stages?
  • How can I quickly connect with webmasters to establish partnerships?
  • What are some effective user incentives to encourage adoption?
  • In terms of features or services, what kind of differentiation would best attract early adopters?
I sincerely seek advice—if anyone has experience operating similar platforms, I'd greatly appreciate any practical insights. All suggestions are welcome!

Focus on niche communities, reward early uploaders, offer unique features like fast playback or API tools, and partner with small sites for embeds and exposure.
Thanks for sharing these valuable suggestions! We're already running an early uploader rewards program, which has shown some promise in building initial content.

However, our biggest hurdle right now is partnership outreach—despite contacting multiple site owners via email, response rates have been near zero. I suspect our approach might need refinement.

Although you're in a difficult niche, it's not unbreakable. Prioritize specialty targeting over general SEO early on. Consider pornographic niches, anime reuploads, or meme communities where there is a large demand for content hosting. For early traction, go for Telegram groups or Reddit subreddits with lax content rules. Offer upfront rev-share incentives or exclusive bandwidth offers as a concrete way to encourage webmaster collaborations. Additionally, early adopters might be attracted by offering ultra-fast streaming rates, zero buffering, or less aggressive advertisements as a means of difference. Giving them a cause to abandon the major players is the main goal.

You are in a tricky phase, but its normal early on. Try partnering with small content creators and offer simple rewards like extra views or small payouts. Also, add easy embed options for forums/blogs and run referral or upload contests to get traction.

Thanks for the insight — it's really helpful.
The biggest challenge I'm facing right now is that I haven’t been able to successfully reach or connect with the webmasters in those niche communities. I've tried a few channels but haven’t made much progress, and that’s currently my biggest roadblock.
Any suggestions on how to break through that barrier would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, this is Esson, founder of TWR (The White Rabbit). I’ll share what worked for me to attract thousands of users to my cloaker.

The most effective strategy — by far — was leveraging my personal brand to promote the platform. I was already known for teaching people how to sell online (info products, nutra, etc.), so I had some visibility in my niche. Then I identified a very painful problem in our market (direct response in Brazil): plagiarism. Here, most offers don’t last 48 hours without being copied.

So I created a free class teaching people how to protect their offers using a cloaker. I wasn’t selling TWR directly — just sharing real, useful content. That built authority, trust, and naturally brought in the first wave of users.

After that, I focused 100% on customer support and improving the software. For the first 10 months, I handled all support myself — literally replying within one minute — to deeply understand user pain points and accelerate development. Later, I built a support team to maintain that 1-minute SLA. That made a huge difference.

Another tip: in Brazil we have a video hosting platform for VSLs called VTurb. I draw a lot of marketing inspiration from them — especially how they use customer podcasts and behind-the-scenes content. I recommend checking out their Instagram; lots of good ideas there you can adapt for your SaaS.

Hope this helps you out. Getting traction in the beginning is tough, but if you solve a real pain and connect with the right crowd, growth will come.

To grow in the early stages, you can try partnering with industry video influencers to engage users and build a community. Offering rewards for users who upload video or share your platform is also effective. Focus on offering exclusive features that your competitors dont have to differentiate yourself

I had the same problem when it came to attracting users in the early stages. Have you tried implementing strategies to partner with content creators or create promotions for new user. I think creating compelling content or special offers would be a great attraction

Great to see someone tackling this space. In the early stages, niche-specific communities and Telegram groups can drive targeted traffic faster than broad social media. Offering incentives like higher revenue share for early uploaders or exclusive content features works well to break the chicken-and-egg cycle. For partnerships, focus on mid-tier webmasters and smaller niche sites they’re more responsive than big players. As for differentiation, maybe prioritize faster payouts, ad customization options, or geo-specific content filters. It’s a tough niche but with smart positioning, it’s doable.
