How badly will bad links affect your competitors?

Just out of curiosity im wondering how badly it would affect them, lets say its a pretty well established white hat seo website that is on the first page of google rank 1-5? If you sent like 20k bad links to them

Google knows about Neg.SEO and they are not stupid either. When they see a whitehat website suddenly gets thousands of crappy links they won't penalize it. The links could just boost the website. Happened to me too before.

Don't waste yoour time on it, if your competitor have a nice established domain then your crappy links will be more like a boost then a neg seo.

"Does negative SEO work?" is what you meant to ask.

We don't discuss negative SEO tactics here, but to at least answer your question, most of the time it doesn't do anything, on rare occasions it drops your competitor's rankings, and part of the time you actually help boost your competitor's rankings.

It's not worth it mate. If the website is completely white hat then your crappy links will only boost the website further. Instead, try spending time on your own website and making it better than your competitor.

How badly would your site get affected if someone does the same shit with you? Why not bother building up quality links on your own website instead of trying to take your competitor down with dirty tactics.

I wonder if this would work:

1. Guy gets negative SEOed
2. Guy changes permalinks so all those old permalinks are 404 pages now
3. Guy installs plugin so all 404s are redirected to the competitor that spammed him

GoogleBot would follow the bad links (with bad anchors and all that) to the competitor.

bad linkbuilding is the least reliable and most novice method of negative seo. There are more effective and sinister things a competitor could do than link building if you really want to impact a sites ranking, but this is not a topic we discuss here or at all publicly.
