So IBP have the #2 slot for 'seo software', and previously it was just a normal organic result, but now it shows up in the SERPs with a video which obviously gets a higher CTR....my question is, how did they do this?

Normally just embedding a video on the page won't get Google to show it in the SERPs right?

That is a good question since its not a youtube embedded video, but actually on their site
 
They somehow tricked the search engine to think it is a 1 minute video.
Very interesting indeed...

It is under the videos results, videos results are not just for YouTube videos. It is a 1 minute video, he didn't trick the search engines. Google just feels that his video is relevant to the search results. They did SEO specifically for the video. People are just used to only seeing YouTube results in Google videos section, because Googles algorithm heavily favors YouTube as an authority in videos.

This is no trick - you just have to mark up the video for Google:

Google Webmaster Support states they recognize two forms of video markup: Facebook Share and Yahoo SearchMonkey RDFa as well as video sitemaps.

"When video information is marked up in the body of a web page, Google can identify it and may use that information to improve our search results."

Just google "google video markup" and the mark ups are explainted...or here the link for the lazy pppl http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=162163
 
One of my websites has the chance to have his thumbnail on the results page.
The home page of the website has a video in HTML5.

Hey apollo, I suggest checking out Mark Dullise's (not sure if that's the right spelling) G00gle video sitemap plugin. I bought it, but haven't got around to using it.

Even if you don't buy it you'll get an idea of how IBP got their video on the serps.

Great source of information. Indeed, ppl are lazy sometimes, but matters if they have come across such questions in their minds or if they even bother about such things.

Surely people on here know about marking up pages for rich snippets? You can get videos, the breadcrumb links to the page, even your own face besides your SERP result these days, and tons more.

Read, read, read about SEO every day, it's always changing, stay on top of the game.

+ 1 here but for "They did SEO specifically for the video." part.

Indeed, the reason is that IBP is #1 for video results.

However, there's no "special SEO" behind it - press CTRL+U to check it out.

Most of the competitors, e.g. http://www.link-assistant.com/ also have videos on their home pages, however, they don't get to top video results.

My guess is that the video was added pretty long ago - back in 2007.
