How are they creating these backlinks?Baffled

I am trying to figure out how my competition is getting links on these edu sites when there website does not have much to do with the edu site at all. I provided my two links down below.

My thinking is this. My competition created some random content on their website just so it would suite the edu website. Could I be right?

I don't think the edu website is even real but whatever.

How am I suppose to give an example if I can't name my competitors?

Because anyone could make a fake page claiming they are Western MI

Competitor is jewellery store -> has page about minerals -> is linked by a kids programm of geo chapter from wmu
