How are sites ranking with few backlinks?

This thread is 1 year old. Since then I have found out that all you need is like 300 pages and 50 really HQ backlinks. That's all you need for success

Everyone and their mother is hiding their backlinks nowadays, quite possible that is the case. Use a less known backlink crawler and try getting the data, you will be surprised.

As everyone mentioned, people are hiding their links. Although I have seen websites that are extremely well built rank page1 with little or no backlinks. Those sites still might have a network behind them or are just using some secret sauce SEO I don't know about.
