How anonymous/secure are proxies and VPNs?

If I use a proxy or a VPN, and I do something that would, for whatever reason, cause someone to want to find out who I am, how safe am I from being found?

When studying TOR several years ago, I learned a bit about time correlation techniques. Plus, if the proxy or VPN keeps logs then that can be an issue too.

I'm just asking because I know I can't be the only person concerned about this. Any words of advice would be great! Thank you!

I'm here quickly to answer this sensible question.

What the person before me said is very far from accurate.

To be precise and not write a dissertation on your answer:

A Proxy like a VPN, whether Mobile / ISP / sneakers / datacenter / tunnels or P2P, can contain logs.

The best-known example of a VPN with logs remains NordVPN.

The onion proxy system already gives you greater anonymity but for high authorities it is not very difficult to detect (several options including ultrasound are possible ).

What I would personally advise you to do is VPN or Proxy called “No logs” which Hideme and Mullvad are part of (and are very popular in fact)

I invite you to read the news or Mullvad's blog to see that the police cannot find any logs simply because there never were any and their recent raid was of no use.

To go even further, Raspberry Py in countries with bad relations on a pirated network, or simply pirated networks can offer you luxury without a trace. ( Like Russia for USA or EU but that can flag your web account or block apps and more )


Keep and remember that anyone can find you if there is a trace.

Tor has some, VPNs and proxies with logs too, but never those that don't have them ( because they don't have them lmao ).

No, they can't on no logs VPN if you don't let them time to place a sniffer of data into the IP

Regarding "no log" vpn and proxies, how can you proof absence of something? I assure you, they do store logs forever. Because if they don't, it's they who will be blamed for malicious activity. Those who don't store logs , start doing so after first contact with guys from 3 letters organization.

A general overview, websites are gonna know you're on a proxy. You're secure to a certain degree, sure, but the IP is something well known as a VPN IP. Think of it as wearing a ski mask in broad daylight, sure no one knows who you are, but people can clearly see you're trying to hide who you are. Proxies are an entirely different thing, sometimes it might even be overkill, depending on what you need it for. If it's running bots, multiple accounts, etc., then mobile proxies are the best for that. Applied correctly, you're connection should be real tricky to discern from any other connection on that country the proxy's on.

There are many places you could be giving away your information, and IP is just one of the most obvious... You can't be anonymous in this world.
