How accurate is adwords keyword tool?

Hello IMers,

I found some pretty good keywords. They have more than 500k 'exact' searches per month. They dont have much competition. I believe I can rank for those keywords.


I checked in google trends, the charts pretty much stable for last 12 months. So, I'd like to know is this info given in adwords tool is correct? I dont want to put all my effort in vain.

No emd is available. But there is no emd in top 10 results either...

compare with trends and google insight for a high volume keyword you already know the volume for for sure. if GKT and trends and insight match, it is pretty accurate.

Thanks for your reply. I just checked with trends and insight. The chart is same for last 12 months. But there is no way to confirm the monthly searches in them. so I take it as the monthly searches in keyword tool is accurate.?

The accuracy I'm looking for is just this. If it says 500k searches per month, there should be at least 200k to 300k searches every month.
 
If see at least 3 sponsored SERP Adwords it is a likely buying keyword.
 
you should try an instrument that calculates KEI like a wordtracker trial to appraise your keyword too.
 
you can check thru some other tools as well

I double check with other tools as well..and adwords is pretty accurate
 
Adword is pretty accurate because I know that from experience. Few keywords are in the first page and i am getting impressions what the show in the keyword tool.

Check the CPC and no of appear in the first page.
 
Sounds like you looked into it as well, but just a note for other reading.

Example : Keyword "Magic The Gathering" has lots of searches and almost no competition... thats because its hard to compete with the makers.

This is noted all over the place, but just always worth dropping in the reminder.
 
I did some tests once on several ppc campaigns which I had historical analytic data going back several years.

So bascially I had a whole bunch of different keywords which I knew for a fact how many impressions and clicks they received.

I found the traffic estimator to be 20% out on average, and this is 20% over estimated, all things being equal in terms of CPC etc.
 
checking out in other tools will give same results because they just check again in google adwords tool only..
 
Looks like akt is pretty much accurate.. So, I'm going for those keywords... Time to work my ass off...

If GKT estimates 500k exact:

1. Go to Insights and enter for first keyword "your keyword" (INCLUDING THE QUOTES) and in the next field another keyword with a close search volume, that YOU KNOW what search volume it has because you have a site that rank #1 for that keyword. So it is not just an estimate, but you know as a fact what volume it has. Now, in Insight select last 12 months and the locale (country+language) you want. You will see a graph and 2 bars, one for each keyword. Each bar has a number associated with the keyword. For the keyword you know, the number should be considered to be 1 (100%), for the other keyword with estimated 500k searches it should be X. Now using the formula you find X.

Let's say keyword1 has 12 and keyword2 has 87. Formula looks like:

12......1 (100%)
87......X

X=87*1/12 = 87/12 = 7.25 more traffic that keyword with 12. So if you knew being #1 in google for keyword with 12 would bring you 10000v/day, then for keyword2 it brinds you 10000*7.25=72500.

This is just an example how you calculate things so you can estimate closely.

Make sure the locale in GKT and the one in Insight are the same. Also, make sure in insight you set it to just 12 months (1 year) not 4 years or a longer time.

Note: in the case of seasonal keywords (e.g. black friday digital camera deals) where you have a massive spike in a month but lower traffic the rest of the year, you would not get matching estimates from the tools because I think GKT estimates based on previous month. That means, you have to adapt formula so it uses numbers shown on the graph not on the bars.

Excellent idea. Thanks + rep.

I gave the keyword which is 15k searches per month and I'm getting 200 to 300 visits per day.

And second one is my 500k keyword. I see the difference. The keyword 1 is at the bottom straight line and the keyword two is at the top. :)
 
What if we don't have a keyword that we know is getting a certain amount of searches a month how can we confirm the accuracy.

In Google's insights & trends there's no data showing the search volume.

YOU KNOW what search volume it has because you have a site that rank #1 for that keyword.

I think you have to divide by some kind of multiplier. I read in a book somewhere that actual numbers are much lower than what google says they are
